$1000+ for a heater core

I think my heater core sprung a leak so I took my truck to the dealer to check about getting it replaced. They want $1067.14 to do it!

I know the job is a pain in the ***, that's why I took it there in the first place. Just didn't expect them to charge that much. Reminded me why I like to do all my car work myself.

Anyone else have a bad heater core? What did you do?

I can'y help with theheater core job, but I am curious: how many miles on the truck, and are you the original owner?

If you have less than 100,000 miles on the L, I's get it fixed and then insist to the Service Mgr. that Ford pick up the whole tab (under 50k miles) due to "premature failure" or "faulty materials". We ALL have a Federal warranty on these trucks that overrides factory and State warranties. IF they say no, write to your Zone Office (in your handbbok) and tell them you want a good-faith repair/reimbursement under the Magnuson-Moss Act and cite the failure reasons mentioned above. It is total BS that the core should fail through no fault of yours (unless you put a 6# pulley on your heater core LOL) they should kick you some $$$$.

I should have known the milk of magnesia act was behind this.

sounds like a good way to spend that $1067 to me good luck getting reimbursement after the fact.

just my .02

The truck has 46K miles on it. Would love it if Ford would pick up the tab but I just don't see that happening. Won't hurt to ask though I guess.

actually, at that low mileage they may very well help you out (possibly as much as 80 to 100%) Of course they don't have to and it helps if you have a good service history (went to that dealer for your services including oil changes, 30,000mile major service etc. in other words if you have spent money in that service department) and they consider you a valued customer. They maybe be able to get ford to cover the repair even though you are out of your 3/36.

Ford has a lot of possibilities... they call them P01, P05, etc. they all apply to different situations.

Either way, I'd ASK for help, because clearly you are out of warranty. I wouldn't go in there DEMANDING IT, or even worse, authorizing them to do it and then after the repair is completed demanding that it be covered by the dealer or ford under the Moss Magnussen act (they probably have never even heard of that and will think you are an idiot).

but then again, thats just my .02 sometimes it pays to be an A-hole. you know like they say, the squeaky wheel gets the grease.

however there is a dealership here in my town that has been known to (when a customer gets too obnoxious) tow the vehicle off of the lot onto the street directly in front of the dealership which just happens to be a MAJOR road through the center of the city (broad street) and then call the police and tell them that the vehicle has been abandoned there!!!

in any event, good luck.

later,
chris

I agree with you Chris, although I am positive that the dealership knows the Magnuson Moss Act. Which is why they will tell you to stuff it if you kick open the door with both barrels blazing.

I hear an awful lot of BS about the Magnuson Moss Act. The only thing it does for you is prevents the dealer from demanding that you purchase consumables from the manufacturer in order to be eligible for warranty service. All this other talk about mods and the MMA is nonsense.
