Torque conv. drain?

How do you drain the converter. Does it have it's own plug? I read that you must drain it separately and then add a total of 15.5 quarts of Tranny fluid (with the deep pan). It sounds like a good idea to me but need advice on the draining method. Thanks

get under the truck and remove the rubber circle shaped plug at the bottom of the bellhousing of the tranny directly in front of the trans pan. rotate the motor (either by bumping the starter or with a ratchet on the crank bolt or a 14mm hex head on the center of you pulley (depending on what you have going on down there ) until you see a small 11mm nut through that little hole. remove the nut and you'll see fluid pour out.

hope this helps, good luck

later,
chris

P.S. don't put in all 15.5 qts at once! put in 8 or so and then start the motor, then add some more... If you pour it all in at once, you'll be cleaning fluid off of your shop floor.

Depends on the year. Not all have them. But yes there is a drain plug on the converter itself.

I recall reading a post that said some time in the 2001 model year the plugs were eliminated. Mine is an 01 and has the plug in the converter..

Thanks guys. I'm assuming when you fill the Tranny like normal through the dipstick tube, the fluid will fill the converter also. If not, can somebody point out my stupidity

A stupid question would be one that is never asked!
I dropped the pan and drained the TC on my L this weekend. I measured 13 qts. Re-use the OEM gasket (it's much better than the cork one that comes with the filter and the pan bolts will bottom out so you don't have to worry about overtightening).
Pour in about 5 or 6 qts and start the engine. It has to pump the ATF into the TC. Shut it off, add another 5 qts and start it again. Then let it run while adding the remaining fluid. I like to drive around a while to warm up the tranny before finally checking the level on the dipstick.
If you measure what you take out you can't screw up by putting that much back in. Be careful not of overfill.
