BUT $1500 JUST buys the hardware NOT the cards needed for all the tricks you mention. AND if you get the NGS setup , it only works for one make and model of car.
I almost bought a NGS but realised without a "connection" that can get software updates it becomes less than usefull pretty quickly... If the stock market comes back around maybe ill take another look.

I have the Actron. Works GREAT for reading and clearing codes. Cost was between 150-200. Works on all ODB2 computers.

Doug, where in the world are you pricing that from? I can buy the NGS with the diagnostic card for 1995.00 and then a service (green) card for $150. That will do EVERYTHING ford (programming keys, all module configurations......) plus all the generic OBDII stuff that any other ODB scanner will do. Im pricing out of the rotunda catalog.
Also, when yo u say you can read and clear codes with autotap, is that ABS, RCM, HEC, GEM, too? or just PCM? just curious. I was thinking about buying a auterra kit for my palmV that will do all the generic stuff, but didnt get because it wont do abs and airbag codes, which i work on as much if not more than pcm related stuff. I have just stuck with our NGS.

Autotap is just the ODBII and Ford specific DTCs ( R/C ).
In addition to the Actron type scanner functions, you can view and log individual setting in the truck like IAT, MAFS flow rate, MAFS output voltage, A/F ratio...etc, but it is not doing what you talked about with the NGS.

The additional pieces may or may not be optional depending on what you want to do. Im sure they sell the (2) $1000 pieces for a reason. If the base system did "everything" why would anyone spend the extra ??
The subscription updates are $900 a year

As Jefflaws mentioned, the NGS gives full capability to pretty much everything in the vehicle. This is provided you have the Deluxe NGS kit. The Basic NGS kit just comes with the diagnostic card, and costs around $1600. This will allow you to do datalogging, code retrieval, and lots of other diagnostic stuff, on all the modules in the vehicle. The Deluxe NGS kit comes with the diag and the function card, and some other cables. The function card is the one that allows you to do the PATS stuff, parameter resets, module replacements, and more. This kit is about $1900. If you really want an NGS, get the deluxe kit, because to buy the function card by itself is about $300, unless you are lucky and snag one cheaper off ebay. Recently, Ford switched to 3 cards, a pre-99 diag card, an 00 up diag card, and the function card. A new purchased Deluxe kit will come with all three.
If you are just looking for code and datalogging capabilities, then go with the EASE software (provided you have a laptop to use it with). I like the EASE way more than the Autotap, and even the basic Ford OBDII package has tons more parameters you can datalog than if using an NGS. There are things the EASE will datalog that's not an option with the NGS, and also using the laptop with the EASE, gives you practically unlimited recording (limited only by your laptops hardware), whereas with the NGS, you are VERY limited in recording storage.

I have seen several "deluxe" ngs kits for sale on ebay and they sell for $600-$800 usually. Even if you get one thats screwed up, hickok does a complete refurbished exchange (new cables and everything) for $395 no matter what is wrong with yours that you send in. So you can feel good about buying a used one and if it doesnt work, just get it re-furbed.
