Front passenger tire blow out

While driving home from work yesterday on a very smooth freeway 5 miles from work I had a blow out going 70MPH. The truck handled remarkably well. It pulled to the left and of course my speed dramatically decreased. I had to drive it for at least a mile because nobody would let me over to get to the side. Maybe it was because the freeway was so smooth, but I was really shocked at how well the truck handled it.

side note:while sitting on the side of the freeway waiting to be rescued a green 4x2 KR drove past me and didn't even bother to stop. I was very dissapointed, but a nice man in a beige 4x4 Explorer for sale stopped and offered his assistance.

Ahhh, the sand dunes. Yet another sore subject for Tomas (literally).

It all boils down to your decision to go to the dunes I believe. Mike is right. If you hadn't have wanted to go to the dunes and 'tool around' in the sand, you would've still had the stock tires (probably) AND you wouldn't have had to deal with all the crap on your front end (which you messed up while playing in the sand).

LMAO

I'm just kidding... it is kind of funny though. I'm very glad that you didn't have an accident with the blowout. Then we'd really catch an earfull about how much you missed Tomas while he was in the shop... yadda... yadda... yadda.

Ahh skagel, you know we all love ya here....

yeah that is what the tire place said because there was no visible damage to the tread indicating I ran over a nail or something. The tire literally blew out. There were three holes on the outer walls of the tire. they are testing it before they cover it though. My rim is fine thank goodness. Even if I have to pay for a new tire it isn't a big deal. I am just glad Tomas is ok and no accident happened because of it.

Oh and I wasn't in Detroit....actually I was in Dearborn.....yeppers less then a mile from Ford World head quarters aka the glass house.

oh and I would have still gotten the AT/S tires even if I hadn't planned on taking him offroad....why? because Joe said so.

Just curious, did you ever find out what was causing your other "vibration" problem? Was wondering if it was a tire separation.

Glad to hear you're ok, and glad to hear the truck handled the blowout good. Makes me feel better with my wife driving back and forth to work at 70+mph.

Joe says it is my brush guard making the noise. He has the same exact brush guard and says his does it too.

as for tire separation...don't think it was that. the tire tread itself looked 100% perfect. it just looks like the tire exploded from the sides. they are testing the tire to see what happened because there was nothing in the tread to indicate road hazard.

Ahh, ok. I hadn't read that you figured out what was causing that.

Hope they figure out what happened to it. At least that way you'll know if it's something you ran over or if it just failed. If you had to drive on it a mile the tire may be FUBARed and they won't be able to tell. Again, glad you and Tomas didn't suffer any damage.

update:

No idea why the tire failed.... no indication of a blow-out, no tread separation... side-wall holes were torn from driving on the deflated tire. There is no obvious reason for the failure. When I arrived on scene, the outside bead was un-seated (again, from driving on it, no doubt) but the inside was still in place. It doesn't appear to have been a sidewall blowout either... It's just a mystery.

Goodyear covered $76 and change of the new one. Because of the limited slip, we had them swap the other front tire for the spare (so there are two tires with the same circumference on both ends of the truck). All seems to be ell again (but, of course, now she's complaining of a vibration at 70 mph... could be an imbalance... will check back soon).

Update:

She had the tires re-balanced and the alignment done, and all is well again. Drove it down to the Toledo Zoo Saturday and it rode like it was new again.
