Xm Radio

Well, I bought the XM RADIO ( www.xmradio.com ) kit last night and am having it installed tomorrow.

The way I see it, for less than the cost of ONE CD, I'm going to have a HUGE variety of music, sports, news, comedy, and talk at my disposal. The service costs $9.99/month but, I believe it will be MORE THAN worth it.

I opted to not replace the factory deck nor changer and just bought the PIONEER kit that hooks up via FM modulator. I'm not a 'sound quality junky' or I would've replaced the entire system. I just wanted the variety and honestly, most of all, wanted the comedy channels.

I'll let you all know how it goes and how I like it. Also, I'll get some pics of the equipment installed -- (I plan on running it up through the center console and using the remote as a 'wired remote' -- also, I'll be able to store the remote in the console (out of sight-out of mind)).

It's installed and I'm in love with it already.

Simply awesome. For less than the price of ONE CD PER MONTH, I have a plethora of channels to choose from....

I'll post some install pics later...

Here Goes...

The pics aren't that great but, it definately shows where the antenna was mounted and a picture of the wired remote (I still haven't decided where to perm mount it or if I will even perm mount it). The 'brain box' of my Pioneer XM unit (GEX-FM903XM) is mounted behind the kick panel next to the passenger's left foot - out of sight and I wasn't going to remove that panel for the pic. Just trust me... that's where it's mounted. It fits PERFECTLY - Almost as if it was made for it to be mounted there...

You all have any suggestions on where to mount the display? Right now, I have it coming up through the bottom of the console and out the small gap where the lid for the console latches. From there, I have a little slack in the cord and thus, can pull it over to my lap while driving and surf the XM channels. I'm not going to cut a hole ANYWHERE inside my truck for a PERMANENT mounting location. I'm leaning more towards a velcro mount or something of that nature so that I can move it out of sight.

So far, I'm nothing short of THRILLED with the XM lineup. I have 100 channels at my disposal (some of which I'd NEVER listen to thus, there are really around 75 channels). Everything from News, Weather, Sports, Music of all kinds, etc is available. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND XM TO ANYONE INTERESTED in having a HUGE variety for minimal $.

Let me know what you all think.

Rockpick,

I just installed the Sirius. I'm also thrilled thus far. Question: Do you have artist and channel info streamed across your screen? I have the Kenwood KDC MP919 HU and it displays the channel number, channel name, category, artist, song title, and album. I was wondering if it was a Kenwood or Sirius thing?

Yup, I get title and artist.

I looked at Sirius but, opted for XM because XM appears to be selling better than Sirius. I'm still worried that one or the other won't make it and I'll be stuck holding $300 worth of equipment but, for now, I know I've made the right decision.

According to three different Best Buy stores and two different Circuit City stores, XM is out selling SIRIUS at a rate of about 10 - 1 from what I can gather. I don't mind the occasional commercial that XM broadcasts (which, from what I could tell, was the main difference between the two services besides price). Most of the commercials are focused on another XM radio show or promotion and I hear very little from companies like Coca-Cola or Double Mint.

I think we're both in the same boat on how much we like it though. The selection is TREMENDOUS and the variety is awesome. Well worth the $ spent. I'm happy.

Cool! Besides 100 channels of near cd quality radio, I think seeing what you're listening to is the best feature yet. And I have to agree, I was a little weary about Sirius longevity in the market. But the salespeople at BestBuy and CircuitCity claimed Sirius had better programming. I think their year-long wait to launch gave XM the edge to dominate the marketplace. It's almost like the PC vs. the Mac or Betamax vs. VHS (we all know how that one turned out).

A lot of the Ford products will carry Sirius as well as Daimler Chrysler and BMW. Sirius may turn out to be a niche product. But like you, I don't want to be holding the bag on $300 worth of equipment.

Oh, well. Enjoy while we can!

Yeah, I've heard that several of the GM cars are going to offer XM as an option for 03. I think corporate america will hop on board with this concept.

I've heard of plans in the work to get a couple of other services active by the end of 02 or begining of 03. We'll see how it goes.

--------------------------

Back to my original thought, where should I mount the display unit? As you all can see, it's just laying above the cupholder now (yes, my console is dirty - please forgive me skagel). Where can I mount that thing?!? I know it's going to get banged around where I currently have it. I'm open to suggestions. HEEELLLPP!

Thanks folks.
