Here's Why Rockpick Wanted Paint Options...

Well, I've pumped this mod up to the point that it'll fall hard. Here's why I was asking about paint earlier. I got this on this little "I need to do something to my truck" mood earlier today and saw this on one other truck a while back.... Of course, I went with Arizona Beige and Chestnut Brown (they're very close matches... the light makes the beige look gold) as my color options. I'll post 'installed' pictures tomorrow. What do you all think?

Looks sweet Rock. I love it....I did mine kinda like that, but chose silver paint to match a lot of the stainless steel that I have added to Tomas, but now that I see what you have done I am a bit jealous.

Here It Is Installed...

Okay, I'll admit it. The Arizona Beige is a little bit 'gold'. It's not quite a match with the Beige but, with no Az Beige in the engine compartment, it's certainly close enough for government work.

Here are some pics of it installed. I'm pretty happy with the look. Adds some personality to the engine compartment and sticks with the color scheme. I REALLY need to detail the engine compartment. I guess that'll be this weekend's job...

By the way, what do you call that plastic piece?

RockPick that looks great. You gave me 1 more mod to think about. I guess I'll just put it on the list for now. The engine compartment did not look bad from the picture, but let us know what you use for detailing if you get it done. Again nice job.

Rock,

Hey, you did a good job with detailing that plastic cover. Even though I like it, I'm just too busy to find the time or money for under the hood appearance mods. To me, there must be a good reason to modify my truck, but don't let that stop you.

I'm probably putting myself into a category that's not warranted but I did want to tell you it looks real good. The only time I open my hood is when I want to check something, otherwise I spend all my time inside the cab behind the wheel.

In rare occasions, I ride shotgun when I let my wife drive. I let the wife drive once I've driven as far as I can go without falling asleep, plus another 100 miles or more, three cups of coffee, roll down all windows, turn up radio and stick head out of window and run off the road and into the ditch and back out again. :p.

RockPick, that looks awsome. I've been thinking about doing that on my HD, i just haven't had time and can't make up my mind on the color combo. I just have a few questions. What kind of paint did you use? and i'm assuming you just used a small brush to paint it???
I build alot of 1/24th scale models, so the painting won't be a problem, but do you think that the model paint would hold up alright??? THanks for the help. Your trucks are lookin good.

Dave... I've got it good. My wife doesn't want to drive it. "It's just too big!..." Hey, no complaints from my department! :)

Harley, I used Dupli-Color spray touch up paint. (available at Autozone). I masked everything off (the entire outter area) and sprayed the beige. It took about 3 or 4 coats (I can't remember exactly how many times I painted it). Then, like you had mentioned, I came back in with the Chestnut Brown. I took the spray and sprayed a few blotches on some wax paper. Using a white out brush (yes, a white-out brush cleaned out with paint thinner), I painted the lettering. Honestly, it was VERY VERY easy to do. Masking the area off was the most time consuming part. I will say this, make 110% sure the the masking tape makes a VERY GOOD SEAL at the edge of the 5.4 plate (or other item that you're painting). I had some of the gold make it under the tape and bleed on to the surrounding plastic. To solve this problem, I used a toothbrush and some fingernail polish remover (which worked like a dream). (I was scared that the polish remover might melt the plastic but, it held up without any problems.

If anyone has any other questions, please don't hesitate to contact me or post here.

RockPick, so i don't have to mask everything off to spray paint it, do you think that enamel model paint (for those 1/24th scale models) would hold up alright? I'm not worried about getting matching paint like you did for your KR, cuz my HD's black, so i was gonna do something like silver backround, and either red "triton" and black "5.4L" or the other way around. I can't decide what would look better yet. Thanks for hte Help

Rockpick May 30, 2002 08:56 PM

Harley,

Yeah, I'd HIGHLY recommend removing it off of your truck (3 bolts) and yes, I'd recommend masking EVERYTHING off. Before I put the first coat of Beige on mine, the cover looked like a gigantic masking tape ball. Trust me, it's a helluva lot easier to mask it off than it is to try to scrub off the overspray in places you didn't want it. Don't slack on the masking.

The model paint. I'm not sure. Heck, I wasn't sure if the dupli-color would hold up on the plastic or under the heat of the engine compartment. I'm proud to say that after washing my truck for the first time since the paint job on the cover (just finished a few minutes ago), all is well under the hood in the paint department.

I think the Silver and Black would look slick. I don't know if you've thought about it but, what about trying a HD Orange on the Silver with the Black. Heck, I'm not sure. Maybe the Orange would be out of place. *shrugs*

Feel free to post more questions.

RockPick, i wouldn't spray paint it without masking it off and removing it, but i was just wondering if the model paint would hold up if i painted it on by brush. I'm going to be picking up some high temp silver spray paint to do my brake calipers, so i probably will take it off and mask it up and spray paint the silver anyway. Now i just gotta decide what colors to make the letters. I'm gonna do a silver backround, and red/black writing combo. Can anybody photoshop that pic for me with silver backround and black "triton" and red "5.4L" and then do another with silver backround and red "triton" and black "5.4L" I'm not sure what would look better. Thanks for the help.

O yeah, i'm saying red, cuz the pinstriping on the HD's is more red than it is orange, so i'm just gonna use red paint cuz it's very close to HD orange.

Thanks again
