Oil Usage, also...

I changed my oil at the first 5K miles, as per service manual. I even towed my '68 Ranchero 800 miles in this time frame. No oil usage at all.

Now, I am at 22K, and have been running Havoline Form III. Been running Havoline for almost 15 years. No problems yet... My truck uses about 3/4 of a quart after 1500 miles. Been doing this since the first oil change. After that, it doesn't seem to lose/use anymore. I still think this is too much usage. I have never had a vehicle use this much oil, after it has been broken in. My Ranchero doesn't use a drop of oil...

AMSOIL now has a 5W20, 7500 XL oil. It is supposedly good to 7,500 miles between changes.

I am most likely switching to Havoline Synthetic, 5W30 this next oil change. Hopefully it will do a lil' better than the Dino 10W30 oil I have been running.

Ranchero's post is the second time in this thread that I've seen that someone using 10w30 is using oil. Hmmmm......

Unhappy 10W30 is a No No

I was told repeatedly by my mechanic to use only 5W20 for the newer models. Scott

Well, I guess I scared my engine back into shape. As of yesterday, the truck hadn't used any oil (that was noticable on the dipstick) in about 2300 miles whereas on my last oil change, in about the same number of miles, it had used 7/8 of a quart.

I guess this is a break-in period? I'm sitting at a little over 12K now. I've heard that this has happend with other owners....

Any insight?

Still Using Oil...

Took a trip this past week. 1500 miles was the total mileage driven.

It seems that my truck is still using oil... I even went back to 5W20. I noticed, that it is still using about 3/4 quart of oil. I am wondering, if it is the Hi-way use causing this to occur.

I finally have time to just drive it in the City for the next few months, without a Hi-way trip. I will let you know how it works.
I am almost to the point, of trying a different Brand of oil, even after 15 years of using Havoline Formula 3, with no problems.

Ford Motorcraft 5W20- No usage (4K)
Havoline 5W30- Used 3/4 quart in 1500 miles
Havoline 10W30- Same as 5W30
Havoline 5W20- Same as 5W30

Dipstick checked prior to Road Trip, and topped off at end of Road trip.
