I was browsing the web looking for seat covers (I know, I know...it was just a thought!) and I came across this article from the washington post. The following is a quote...

"There are two kinds of pickup-truck buyers in the market nowadays -- real truck people and pickup poseurs.

Real truck people buy full-size models such as the F-150 XL or STX, or some comparable vehicle, such as the Silverado from Chevrolet or the Titan from Nissan Motor Co. Those are basic, rugged, body-on-frame pickups with meant-to-get-dirty, cleanable interiors. They specifically are designed for commercial use, construction jobs, for the kind of rough work that actually takes place every day on the real King Ranch, and for hauling trash.

Real truck people care about fuel economy, but you won't see them running away from their trucks when pump prices rise.

Pickup poseurs dump their pickups when gasoline prices go up. They want tufted, plush trucks -- trucks that look and feel more like limousines than they do pickups. They like models such as the F-150 King Ranch. Beneath its pretty face and overdressed body are a commendable 5.4-liter, 300-horsepower V-8 engine and sturdy body-on-frame construction. It is rear-wheel-drive, or, as is the case of the tested model, four-wheel-drive. It has all of the things that make a full-size pickup a pickup.

But pickup poseurs are more interested in style than they are in substance. They would never use the F-150 King Ranch to haul trash, traverse mud, or climb rocks. They are not pickup truck loyalists. That means they are not likely to hang tough with Ford or any other automotive company when the going gets rough at the gas pump."

So what do you think?

I just got my truck a few days ago knowing full well what the gas prices are. I put in a hundred in just the other day. I put my dogs in the bed and one of 'em sh*t all over. I just wash rince and repeat (besides it's got a liner). Sure my feet get muddy, so I replaced the factory mats with some heavy duty mats and I don't know...use some common since and wipe my feet off.

My wife works with horses, so we have a trailer. I tow stuff with my "poseur" truck. For that matter, have you seen the trucks people drive in that business? They make my little truck look like a Matchbox car.

My opinion, humble as it is...I bought the truck because I may never get to drive an Aston Martin or the Ford GT I would love to own (but then again, I'm only 28) and because I'm married with children, I wanted something I could call my own. My truck is a statment about me. For all the crap I've had to deal with in my life, I look at my family, I look at my home, I look in my driveway and you know what? I think I've done pretty damn well.

A poseur has no confidence or satisfaction. I have both in spades. My truck is testament to that.

People don't like to be categorized.
The Left, The Far Left, The Right, Neo-Cons, Truck People, Poseurs

Even you are kicking and screaming as you are being labeled and boxed.

that's okay. Just have the satisfaction of being able to "look down" on others when in traffic.
And you do see some interesting things too...Right Rauol?

When it's clean and polished up my KR looks the part; but most of the time I use it to keep my ranch running. I just take care while I'm using it and for a 2001 4x4 - she's looking pretty damn nice - for a work truck.

My KR Journey

My first "truck" was a 1996 Mazda B-2200 (Ford Ranger by another name). in 2000 my future wife "convinced" me that I should get a bigger truck for remodeling etc...and so I'd be safer in traffic. Who am I to argue?
I got an F-150 supercab. I'll keep this short, but for one reason or excuse I've been through several trucks over the last 7 years including an F-250 Turbo Diesel. All the time talking myself out of a King Ranch because the dogs would ruin the leather...the cost...whatever.

I'm on the road a lot. Commute is an hour and 15 minutes one way to my day job and then my hobby/business keeps my on the road in the eveings and weekends. My wife (yep same woman as above) said she thought it would be a good idea to trade up for the GPS and told me I should get what I wanted for lots of reasons.... SHE said I deserve it because I did 24 years in the Navy....have worked hard all my life....am a hell of a nice guy (okay so I said that) soooo

I came home with a 2007 Copper metalic KR with 20 inch Pirelli ATRs.
It is without a doubt the most comfortable truck I've owned. I LOVE this truck.

As for being a poser... I do cover the back seat and built a platform that my two 110# Chesapeake Bay Retrievers lay on when they are in the truck, and the rail protectors did their job hauling a load of lumber for my latest home project....and it will go off road when the need or want arises because first and foremost it is a TRUCK.

My motto is "life is too short to smoke cheap cigars"......and I don't smoke cheap cigars...in or out of my KR.

Green I can relate.....Life is good.

Probably some truth to it.... I have a Lariat. I do haul all kinds of crap. When it's clean, I can have it ( I don't though) valet parked at a nice restaurant. On the flip side, I see lots of complaints on here about mileage. More than one thread about guys getting rid of the truck for a better mileage vehicle. Just before getting my '04, I almost bought a MB Cl500. Absolutely t**ts car to drive. Fun all the time. Damn, can't haul firewood, my dirtbike, our jetskiis or even a christmas tree......

i have a lariat F-150 supercab, 2 wheel drive, i use it to haul stuff, tow trailers and stuff, it replaced my '01 F-250 4X4 V-10, we had a volvo s40 that my wife and i decided to trade in on an '03 Harley Truck, because we wanted more room for the baby seat. Now we pretty much just take it to shows and cruises on nice days.

I guess that I am a poser with the harley truck but a true truck owner with the lariat... but neither of our trucks are getting sold because of gas prices

Lemme blow a little sunshine your way The Harley is a cruiser, pure and simple. So I wouldn't place you as a poseur. Now if you had a Sportrac ( Chickup where I live) or an Avalanche ( big Chickup) that might be different....

I have no idea what the author of that article was trying to accomplish? I have driven my KR into some of the roughest Colorado back country and packed it to the top with the year's firewood. I've hauled pretty much everything that a truck owner hauls. I use the truck part of my truck as needed and I enjoy the limousine part of my truck the rest of the time. And with great pleasure, I might add. And I certainly don't bat an eye at $3 gas. Admitedly, I obsess over my leather a bit more than what might qualify as healthy, but who is harmed by that?

Silly, silly...

RE: poser

I think generalizing like that is just plain stupid.

Call me a poser for driving a 2003 KR... But oh... should I mention that I’ve used it 90% of the time for work since I got it…? Or that I put over 25,000 miles on it in the past 8 months... or that I routinely drive it in mud, snow or whatever it takes ?

Apparently I shouldn’t… hehehe … or I’ll spoil someone’s clever article…

It doesn't much matter to me what they say, and I honestly have no practical reason for a truck. I rarely tow, and rarely use it to haul things. A few times it has been a life saver to move furniture, mulch, and whatever, but I like the extra interior room and capability should I ever need it. A truck will make any long distance drive much more comfortable than a car, IMO.

I had a 1999 F150 XLT Ext. Cab, and traded it on my 2005 King Ranch Super Crew, and wouldn't go back. It is a very well appointed truck that I rarely use "as a truck", but I have worked hard enough and been successful enough to feel that I should reward myself with a vehicle I feel is a step above the average.

They can say what they want, I'm just going to keep telling myself they're just a little envious of those of us who are willing to do what it takes to achieve the success we desire, and reward ourselves accordingly.

I believe Ford targets some of their pickup offerings for 'posers'. I doubt many new KR are used on the same basis as a work truck. In my humble opinion, I don't care. I use my truck mainly for travel and personal enjoyment and when there is a situation requiring hauling or carrying, the KR goes into action for that too.

I have an uncle that owns a construction company. He uses an F250 King Ranch to pull dozers, backhoes, trailers, and tosses buckets of grease and oil in the cab with him. He gets dirty and jumps in the truck, and the truck is trashed. Bed is mashed in, seats look like they should be used as an oil rag.

By any means he is not a truck poser, he uses the crap out of his truck.

I use my truck to pull my car trailers, and atv trailers with but I do take extreme care with it.
