I say never drive in 4x4 - hi or lo - unless to do otherwise is impossible or dangerous (patchy snow/ice might pursuade me to leave 4 hi engaged for a while). In other words, as a general rule, if it isn't absolutely necessary where you're at at any given moment, don't do it. 4WD requires some slip under the tires in order to operate properly. If that slip isn't there, torque will feed back into your driveline and tear things up.
