King Ranch Hitch - Redo

Being this is the first winter in Northern California for my KR, the logo'd trailer hitch has taken a beating - lots of rust / made it look really bad.

So I decided to do a refurbishment to it - took it down to the base metal using a circular wire brush attachment on the cordless drill / this removed all of the rust - and whatever finish was originally there.

I then found a Rust-Oleum spray (Hammered Copper) and a clear overcoat (Fleck Stone). After cleaning the hitch, I taped off the "W" and then sprayed it with three (3) coats of the Hammered Copper followed the next day with three (3) coats of the Clear.

I think it looks really close to the original and I do like the hammered look to the paint.

I recommend putting a clear coat over the hitch so the elements don't take a toll - and if they already have, think about the products that I used to refurbish yours.

I think it looks great. Now all you need is a plug for that hole in your bumper!

Go to your dealer and get an '03 ford focus wheel cap and then to a plumbing shop for a sink whole plug and 3m them together and you have a Ford plug cover for the hole! I don't think I have a picture of mine unfortunately.

Looks nice!

I went down to Autozone and got the Ford blue oval hitch and now I am waiting on my King Ranch decal to come in to complete my KR hitch. I'll post pics when done...cheers...Mike

I was looking at my hitch plug the other day and saw a lot of rust and wear. Was thinking it wasn't holding up very well. Nice to see I'm not the only one. I'll have to try your technique in the spring. It looks pretty good!

When I got my hitch plug this spring, I shot it with about six light coats of Krylon Satin clear coat. I haven't had any rust yet, but, I think you need rain, (or some moisture anyway), for rust to get started!!! That's something we haven't seen for a long time!
