'05 KR In the Paper Today

Couldn't believe it. One of the local dealerships featured an '05 KR in their weekend add in the local paper. $33.5k down from sticker of $44.5!! And they were offering 0% financing, so one assumes the price could be negotiated down even further if buying with cash.

No doubt the dealers are hurting these days, supposedly last month was a record low.

I'm sure you're right. I guess I was no more surprised by the low price than by the fact that an '05 was still out there on the lot! I just did a search on Ford's inventory website. In Colorado Springs, there are two black '05 KRs left. I'm surprised they lasted this long. What I find even more interesting is that there are only two '06 KRs in all of the city! And get this - they're both priced below either of the '05s!!

Not all that much of a surprise really.

First Ford, in response to GM, has lowered prices on all new models in an effort to emphasize value and get away from big rebates.

Second with '06's coming in everyday, the dealers need to dump ANY left over 05 as quickly as possible regardless of it being a KR, a 500, or a Focus.

About the only thing that Ford wont drop there shorts on right now is the Mustangs, but that WILL change soon enough.

Where are you located? I have a buddy who is dying to get himself a King Ranch, but he hasn't had any luck with the local dealers in finding an `05 at a reasonable price - I got mine under the Family Plan pricing, and he's trying to get a similar price.

Colorado Springs. If you go to Ford's website and search inventory, a zip code that can be used is 80906. The specific dealership that put the advert out is Phil Long.

The dealers also usually get money back on left overs when the new models come out, to help move the older units. That's probably why the price is so low.

Also, make sure it is New, never titled and if any fee's, etc.

I don't think they would be listed in Ford inventory as new if they weren't. Dealers may pull that kind of crap, but I don't think Ford Motor Company would.

Thanks for the leads on those great prices - I forwarded the info on to my buddy and he's called that Phil Long dealer, and they're supposed to be e-mailing him a copy of the window stickers on a couple of trucks. He's getting psyched - hopefully he can work something out - he'll just have to pay to ship it cross-country, but I'm thinking that won't be prohibitively expensive, given the great pricing on the truck!

I'd be thrilled to learn this forum/thread led to new KR ownership. Let us all know...

I'm up in Fort Collins, but my parents live in Colorado Springs (near Monument). I was just down there and went to Phil Long - Chapel Hills. What a bunch of jerks. My dad is a pretty smart/shrewd man -- retired CPA/MBA/CFO. The first time he was there, the salesmen would not give him a price on the F150 he was looking at. They just wanted to play games. It was bizarre, but was back in March, when things weren't as dreary.

Two weeks ago, we went back there together. Salesmen were coming in waves and would NOT leave us alone. The last guy who came over, we told him that we were just looking. He suggested we go to the Wal-Mart parking lot -- plenty of cars to look at over there. Unbelievable.

Went over to Phil Long - Motor City the next day and got a completely different experience. The guys were straight up, gave a no BS deal, showed the invoice sheet (with X-Plan, A-Plan, and the other stuff highlighted), and gave a good trade-in price. My dad still balked, though.

The Chapel Hills dealership called him a few day later and my dad went back down there. Wait a minute, maybe he isn't as smart as I indicated above! Guy told him he'd give him below X-Plan price, but the numbers didn't look right. After lots of hassle, my dad called me and asked me for the X-Plan price (which I have access to). They were $2,000 OVER X-Plan. When put on the spot about it, the salesman said "well that's because we overvalued your trade-in." Whatever, but you sat there and told my dad that the number on the paper was below X-Plan. And what good does it do to give me $1,000 extra on my trade and then charge $2,000 more on the truck. This is crap right out of the car dealership horror stories. Needless to say, my dad walked.

I wouldn't go near Phil Long - Chapel Hills. Phil Long - Motor City seemed like a good place though. The only problem there is the after-market crap they pu on EVERY truck: Pin-Stripe ($100), Wheel-Locks ($100), Bed-Liner (forget), and some sort of sealent package they list for ($700). That sealent package includes a poorly applied clear plastic overlay on the hood of the truck (where a bug-guard would be). Looks terrible. Gave me flashbacks of the Fargo scene where William H. Macy was talking about the "Tru-Coat" on the car. Anyway, when we were dealing with them, they would remove all the junk, other than the pin stripe and sealent package, which they were going to throw in for cost (~$300). I just couldn't believe that in this day and age of ultra price-sensitive markets, that a dealership would add over $1,000 in crappy options (over $800 of which cannot be removed) to every single truck.

Anyway, to make a short story very, very long: stay away from Phil Long - Chapel Hills. We're 0 for 3 and they seem quite happy to keep their 2005 stock in inventory. Must not be aware of carrying costs and working capital turns over there!

Well, it's always good to hear real and recent experiences, so thanks for sharing. I honestly can't deal with those dealership guys; I bought mine from a guy named Jerry Goodrich here in town. His bread and butter is fleet sales, but he's a true-blue western cowboy (a real, ranching, roping, riding cowboy with on old west chivalry about him (even tipped his hat to my wife upon meeting and parting)) who's happy to deal with individuals too. I told him what I wanted, he called around and found it at the price I wanted. Next day a brand new KR was driven down from a dealership in Nebraska (getting a new truck with a few hundred miles on it was the ONLY downside to this deal). He called me when it arrived at one of his properties in town. I wrote him a check, he handed me the keys and my temporary registration, I drove away a VERY happy man. Total time spent on the deal was less than 10 minutes. He also introduced me to the service manager at a Lincoln dealership just down the road from my house. I was skeptical at first, then realized they work on LTs every day, and I couldn't be happier with their service.

So I can’t say anything about the dealership, their salesfolk, and what-have-you. I just noticed a price that was even less than I thought my rock-bottom price was and thought I would share that with the group. I was mostly pointing out that there were still ‘05s to be had, which I didn’t think there were…

Ft. Collins is a nice town by the way. Haven't been there in years, but I sured liked what I saw of it.

BTW, about that coating you were talking about...

I had my windows tinted by an outfit nearby to the Motor City dealerships. They are a "3M Clear Bra" dealer and 90% of their business was from dealerships. I can't imagine that they would do that to vehicles unless a customer specifically requested it, which would be a silly thing to do because of dealer markup. I guess people are gullible enough to take an add-on product like that and pay the extra $$, even though they didn't ask for it.

I didn't think it looked too bad, but I wouldn't do it to my truck. They claim their product is the only one not to haze over after time, but I'd have to see it to believe it. Also, the line where the bra stops/starts is quite clear to see, I imagine even more so after a coat of wax.

Well my buddy called Phil Long about the KR in the paper - needless to say, the truck was long gone. But even worse, when he asked her for a good price on one in stock, the price she gave was much higher. When he asked her about it and asked her for a better discount, she got quite snippy with him. The entire exchange was via e-mail, and he forwarded some of the discussion to me. I won't go into the gory details, but suffice to say that if this is their idea of "customer service" I don't know how they're still in business. She really comes off like a word that rhymes with ditch - I was pretty surprised by the attitude she took with him. He sent an e-mail to the manager, but I think it's pretty clear he's done talking to Phil Long. He's still poking around here and there to see what kind of deal he can find on an `05.
