Stereo in the Dash

Hello Gang

I need your advice as to what Stereo will look and sound great in the dash of my 2003 King Ranch. I currently have the factory 6 disc changer in there but am wanting Sirius in the dash. I do have an after market Sirius box stuck on the dash with velcro but hate the way it sounds. My MAJOR concern is that I will cheapin the appeal of the woodgrain by craming some overly large black piece of plastic in there. I always talked myself out of going with something aftermarket because I would lose the 6 disc feature. But now that I have satellite I rearely listen to cd's anymore. I did try an aftermarket add on that was supposed to allow me to add RCA inputs for an Ipod or other accessory but that didn't work

Any Suggestions?

Thanks in Advance

SS

Not sure you have much choice given what you stated above. Either you go with an aftermarket unit, or you put an add-on unit to your factory one. There aren't too many of the older style units that have satellite control.

Well, all together the aftermarket would give better sound. You can find units that are larger that will fill the space better, but in my experience they run a little more. Or you can go high $ and try to find one with a navigation unit in it.

Or you can go my route and build yourself a carputer. That's what I just started in on, doing a custom installation in my new Navigator console. Just got the console in this weekend, and I'm working on putting the computer together now. Got a 7" widescreen LCD that will fit the factory hole quite nicely. I looked into the AVIC units, but they are too costly and can't be customized. I can build a carputer custom installation for far cheaper than the AVIC ones, and I can put whatever I want on it, including navigation, XM, Blutooth phone control, virtually unlimited MP3s (limited only by my laptop hard drive storage capacity), and I can even get a GPRS internet access card if I wanted to, but I don't need to surf the internet in my car. I will probably start documenting my progress here soon, as I am still gathering components and putting it together.

Keep us updated on the progress. It sounds far to cool to have in a car. I can imagine how much trouble you are putting into this. It would be great if you can make it easier for the rest of us.

For now I am just going to go with a Pioneer and say forget it to the rest. i would like o find some extra woodgrain to try and make the surrond to the new stereo since it will be smaller.

Thanks for everyone's help

Yeah, I've been looking for the woodgrain too, but have been unsuccessful thus far. I'm only undertaking the project because I have always built computers myself, and I'm intrigued by the new small form factor computers that can do everything.
