To Reset Or Not to Reset

All,

When you gas up, do you reset the onboard computer or not? Is the mpg calculation more accurate one way or the other? I found after my first fillup that the computer was way off. I was then out of town, my wife decided the truck was hers, she filled it at least once without noting the mileage, so I can't really say where it's at now. I filled 'er up again today for the first time since being back home (wanted to beat those $5/gal predictions) and went ahead and hit the reset button. By the time I got home (about 1.5 miles, mostly uphill), it was reporting my mileage to be about 8 mpg. I know that'll smooth out, but I was just curious if I should be leaving it alone?

Thanks...

According to the manual, the "miles to empty" is not effected by resetting the "instant mileage".

The "miles to empty" is determined by an internal calculation that is based on the long running averages your vehicle gets.

Having said that, all I reset is the trip meter, so I can determine how far I've gone on the amount of gallons I put in the tank. I leave the instant mileage alone.

I usually reset mine

I've found it to be pretty consistent. I have noticed a slight difference in fuel economy when the A/C is off - must be one big compressor to have that much of an effect on that 5.4L V8!

I also topped off the tank this afternoon to avoid the supposedly coming $4/gal gas. But I didn't reset the computer this time - maybe I will tomorrow before I go out.

It's been getting 13 between here and work - I just started a new job on Monday, and it seems consistent. Yeesh. I'm hoping the fuel economy will increase as the engine breaks in - still less than 4,000 miles on the odometer.

My on-board computer keeps telling me ~13.5, but I haven't been able to do my own calculation since the first fuel-up (which suggested a little better efficiency). I'm hopeful for at least 15 after a break-in period...
