slight wobble...

hey guys,

i've noticed that my truck has a slight steering wheel wobble around 65 to 70 mph. i saw that there is a tsb out on this. does anyone know what that tsb entails? is it just a good tire balance...? thanks...

Troy...

Similar problem on mine at 72mph - 74mph. A simple balancing of the tires solved my problem for the most part.

I'm not exactly sure what the tsb calls for honestly...

Let me know what you figure out...

As I noted in my last thread, I had the same issue. Doing a search on the 2004-2005 forum will yield that this is a problem for several other members also.

I took it back to the dealer, who balanced the front tires and then road-tested it. They declared it fixed but I still have a slight nibble at the same speed that you indicate. However, it is much better than it was before and I think I'll live with it for now.

When I take the KR in for it's 5000 mile checkup, they'll rotate the tires and we'll see what that does to the nibble. Another member said his went away after a tire rotation. Good luck to you and keep us posted.

When I bought my Lariat, I test drove a black and tan like RP's and I wanted it bad, but it had a steering wheel vibration at about 65-70 mph. I drove it back to the dealer and told them that I wanted to drive the red and tan Lariat. I drove it and it was as smooth as can be. The salesman said that it was because of flat-spotting on the tires, but because of all of the problems about vibrations that I read about here, I decided to go with the red one.

I am very happy with my decision and very thankful to F150online.com for helping me avoid something that could have been a problem.

wonder if the wobble has anything to do with the tires themselves? my truck has the optional wrangler ATS where as i think the standard tire is the RTS...right? i know i never had any problem with my '02 and its RTS tires...

The standard tire is the BF Goodrich. I have the ATS and they are perfect. The black one that I test drove with the vibration also had the ATS. The brand of tires is not the cause of the wobble.

well, i've had issues with brand new tires before...so i'll explore that option if it comes to that...hopefully a GOOD balance job will take care of it...

btw, does anyone here have full access to the TSB pertaining to steering wheel wobble??

i think the common term for what you are describing is a nibble not a wobble. anyway, my 04 that i had did not have any nibble when i first got it. i rotated the tires and thats when it started. rather than going and getting them balanced i bought some new crossterrains since the stock were real bad in the rain and winter was near. with the crossterrains there was no more nibble and the ride improved dramatically. hope that helps.

Mine has BFG Rugged Trail TA's and has the nibble also. I think this problem has more to do with having 18inch wheels than the brand of tire. I was told it's harder to balance 18's and up and keep them balanced.

Is this why the 06's are coming with 17's?

The dealer can perform this of they have a Hunter GSP9700/9712 Road Force balancer. My dealer bought one because of this problem with F150s
