thinkin' about trading for an '05 KR...

hey guys,

been awhile since i've been around. anyway, with all the great deals out there right now...i'm seriously thinking about trading my '02 4x4 KR for a new '05 KR. there aren't alot out there to choose from where i live (SD)...

anyway, have you guys been happy with your new trucks? also, i've noticed that on some window stickers there is an entry called JOB#2...does anyone know what that means? also...is the audiophile system worth the money...thanks!

when you got to trade dont be shocked at what they want to give you for your old truck. they have the family plan price but what they dropped the sticker to invoice amount will be reflected on the trade. basically what ford as the other manfacturers did was depress the value of what we are driving by dumping. this can be good or bad depending on how you look at it.

I recently used the Ford Family Plan and I was able to get above Kelly Blue Book trade in value for excellent condition on my '02. Of course, you will always be better off to sell your vehicle outright before you go to the dealer. I traded mine last Thursday and my trade was sold in 4 days. A good truck is always in demand, especially a four wheel drive.

My thoughts ...

1) The audiophile is a $250 option. That's pretty good value. I've never heard an F-150 w/out it, so I can't compare to stock. However, the audiophile compares favorably to most other premium audio systems out there: my wife has a Chrysler minivan with factory Infinity speaker system, my friend has a VW Passat with a name brand factory speaker system, etc. The F-150 does tend to put out more bass than these other systems, though. I put in an old rap CD to test it out and was impressed. If you want to be heard from two blocks away, then look elsewhere -- you'll need aftermarket components.

2) Trade-in. Find your rock-bottom low and stick to it. Use an Excel spreadsheet if you need to play with numbers. If you have sales tax, then remember that the trade-in lowers the taxable amount of your new vehicle. Be ready to walk. I had one dealer that let me walk and one that didn't -- guess where I bought the new truck?

3) Your dealer ought to be able to find what you want. They can usually trade inventory with other dealerships. I'm in Colorado and there is a boat-load of KRs up and down I-25 -- so, they're out there, your SD dealer just needs to find one for you.

4) I noticed that the standard MSRP went up with each JOB. In fact, the last one also increased the Destination & Delivery from $795 to $845 (or something like that). Ford has a great website that lets you search dealers' inventories and view window stickers. Because of the variance in base MSRP, you can actually find models with more options priced lower than others with fewer options. If you can find a truck that's been on the lot a while, you'll pay less because the sticker is less. My KR had a base MSRP of $39,555. I think it's up to around $40K with the latest build.

5) I've been pretty happy, though it's only been a few days. Good power, but doesn't feel like the 300 HP and 365 ft-lbs. That's a common theme with this truck, though. I'm happy with it, I just think that Ford may have set itself up by promoting the engine numbers too much -- when you gloat over those types of numbers, people expect sports car performance, even in a truck. You won't get it in stock configuration.

The KR is plush. Very nice. I got mine loaded up -- only missing the bed extender and DVD (which is a mutually exclusive option with the moonroof). Everything is working well so far.

hey guys, thanks much for the feedback. i actually found a copper one nearby that i'm interested in. will probably go check it out this weekend. btw, i've checked trade-in values for my '02 and come up with $20,300 from kelly blue book...and $23,000 through NADA. hummm...that's a pretty significant difference!

anyway, i just looked out the window at my charcoal blue baby sitting in the driveway...and am wondering...."why the hell am i even thinking about getting rid of her"!

Same here, just got mine 6 days ago but loving it! I traded in my 99 Z71 for it and kept my wife's 99 F150. Now we're a full Ford family! I agree with 67L48 about the power from takeoff, but the engine is smooth and feels powerful when you get up to speed. I guess it takes a bit to get this beast moving! I think the sound system is one of the best factory jobs I've heard.

My wife and I are both very happy with the upgrade, except she keeps swiping the keys...

Hey Troy... LTNS!

I was in a similar boat...

I am eligible for Z-plan and thus, I went ahead and moved on it. I will admit that there are times that I see my old KR and think, 'why did I trade?...' but, after kicking back in the seat and really looking at the new truck sitting around me, feeling the HUGE difference in ride quality, and knowing that I have the 4wd capabilities that I didn't have on my last truck (I only got a 4wd because I knew Skagel would give me hell if I got another 'girly 2wd'), I'm very glad that I was able to do it.

While the new body style's have been 'cheapened up' (no color matched handles, mirrors, and several other things), they have upped the bar in several other places... you will notice ride quality immediately.

Feel free to give me a yell if you have questions... best of luck with your decision!

You know its a tough call. I think the 05 interior is a little more comfortable than the 02. The additional HP and torque of the newer 5.4 does feel more powerful. (But not the kind of power my 350Z had). The audiophile does have a much wider range (lots of bass and decent highs). I definately would go for it if you can find the right vehicle.

No bad vibes for me, but it's only been 4 days and 250 miles. I do have a headliner rattle, but that is covered under a TSB.

I test drove two trucks. One of them had a steering wheel vibration at 65 mph. After all that I read, I decided that I would test drive the second truck before I made a decision. When I test drove the second truck, the vibration was non-existent. The dealer contributed the vibration on the first truck to flat-spotting on the tires because it had sat on the lot for a while. Needless to say, I bought the second truck. Maybe the first one would have smoothed out, but I wasn't going to take a chance.

I had an 'ever so slight' nibble at 72mph. A quick trip to my local tire shop for a 4-wheel balance solved that... I'm currently around the 10K mark on the odo.

Build Date: 10/04

'67, thank you so very much for takin' the time to right that out. As you'll see in my started thread, you answered several of my questions with this reply. Good info.

Have 13K+ on the 05 KR now. Still, like RP, kick myself and ask why I traded the 01 KR.....but the 05 is such a nice truck.

The seats are nicer in the 05 too. I also like the rear bench vs the twin rear buckets my 01 had. The twin rear buckets with console looked great but wasn't very practical.

The power and ride of the 05 is head and shoulders above the 01.

You won't be sorry..
