2001 KR towing question

I'm looking at a 2001 KR, 5.4L supercrew, 4x2. It appears to have been very well maintained. From what I understand, in general the 2001 F150s are pretty solid, but of course every vehicle has little problems here and there.

Is there any specific to the 2001 models that I should look out for?

I do have one question for those that have towed. The owner told me it has the towing package. I'm looking to tow a car on an 18 ft. open trailer. With spares, the car, my stuff, and the trailer, I'm thinking around 6,500 lbs. Would the KR handle this without too much drama? Is there anything else you guys would recommend (weight distributing hitch, sway control, etc)? Does it have enough grunt to handle that weight without huffing on hills?

Thanks for the help!

For what you're going to be towing, the KR should do just fine - the 5.4 has the needed power. Just remember that when going up hill to turn off the overdrive and if necessary manually gear down to keep the RPM's in range (taking the load off). There should be lots of data available on the 'net regarding towing with a F150 2 wheel drive.

Good luck and if you get the KR posts a couple of pics.

Enough Grunting already

71dsp,

I tow a 31ft. Airstream with my 4x4 KR 02. I use a weight distributing hitch with friction sway control. I have only a few mods to include FAL 270 fans and anti-sway bar on the rear suspension (highly reccomended--it makes the rear end far more civilized). I towed from eastern NY to Alaska without any problems, though I wished for more power over the Rockies. I'll probably put in a whipple SC just for grins at some point. For an 18ft trailer you'll do just fine. I personally recommend the BrakeSmart controller if you don't have one already. They're really nice and simple to install.

Good Luck!
