Back-up Camera + LCD Monitor Install

No matter how careful I try to be backing up my KR, I don't feel that I can "see" as well as I would like to. So I have been looking at back-up cameras and small LCD monitors to make my own system (instead of paying inflated pricing for a pre-packaged kit). Found a small camera on eBAY that has a 120 degree field of vision and a small LCD monitor. By combining these two items, is this all that is needed to make my own back-up camera system? Seems like it to me. Any and all thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks.

cjw3cma,

I could not agree with you more on the back up camera. I test drove a Lexus RX 330 for the wife and it had the camera and it was awesome. Long story for another post, but we bought a KR over the LEXUS!
How's that for an endoresment on the KR

I was thinking about trying to do a back up camera 2 months ago and found the the following message It is pretty old but, the mod this person did was great. I just searched the board again under BACK UP CAMERA and found a few newer posts.

I did some looking around and JC Whitney had one set up with a monitor you could mount and I found a few other that used a special rearview mirror that 1/3 of the mirror was a LCD for the camera. Ebay is a good idea. The item on the links you left looked good. Where are you going to mount the LCD? I was thinking on the floor infront of the center console. Unless I by a new deck with a screen this is probably the only option.

Let us know how this turns out for you. I want to so this mod on my KR. I am waiting for the day I run over one of the neighbor kids' bikes that they always seem to leave laying around in the most illogical places.

cjw3cma...

Having bought my 2003 KR (my first truck), the size of the blindspot bothered me (all my previous vehicles were convertibles, mainly 'stangs). I picked up some parts at my local hardare and electronics stores and made my own system. You can see the parts and some installation links in my gallery.

Camera Mods

On the 2003, the attachment does not interfere with use of the hitch. I put the wires in plastic loom and ran them along the drivers side following existing cables, entering the cab via an existing grommet in the firewall. I tied the grounds to a metal brace under the dash which becomes visible when you pop off the fuse cover. Because the power demand is so small, I tapped directly onto two circuits directly in the fuse box. The power to the monitor is always on to maintain the settings, and I turn it on only when in use. The camera power only comes on when the switch is on.

The monitor is 6 1/4" color and has a reverse image feature which really helps. It came with a tripod type mount which I adhered to the dash below the radio. It is held on with adhesive (also came with the monitor) and three tiny screws. The coverage is good except at the very corners of the truck. I have learned to gauge my distance based on the image size and am very happy with it.

The total cost was about $250 for camera, monitor, extra cable, mounting hardware and wire loom.

Hope this helps...

Dave...

Dave,

Nice mod. Along the same line as what I'm thinking about. The camera that I originally linked to seems to be able to be mounted wherever I decide to put a hole for it (leaning towards "in" the license plate). Monitor will go right where yours is, but will try to mount differently (so hard to put holes in the KR - had a hard time drilling the pilot holes for the splash guards on all four wheel wells !!!). Thinking about a monitor that has reverse image capability so that I can use the camera as a back-up aid and also a "spy" camera in normal view.
With Christmas coming up, this may be the gift for the truck (it IS a member of the family, right ?!?).

I just went back and looked at the pics. I guess I spent more than I remembered spending. I guess that's what happens when one is entering the state of 'old farthood'...

Decided to wait until after I've purchased our travel trailer to get the rear back-up camera setup. Will make it so I can hook up the camera either at the end of the trailer or the truck.
Instead I went ahead and purchase the ATN AutoPark 2000 system from Overstock.com for under $25.00 (delivered - best price around) which will do what I need for now.
