Do you wear denim in your KR ?!

Stupid question really I know....however bear with me.

As some of you know I have a long standing interest in the care of leather.

I've been looking after leather in cars for more years than I care to remember.

Recently one of our oldest companies that supplied the very best leather and care products for firms like Bentley, Rolls Royce and Aston Martin finally closed down.

I have thus been experimenting with various products to find an adequate replacement for Connolly Hide Food.....the very best product I have ever used.

In my peregrinations around various companies I came across an interesting snippet the other day.

The worst thing you can wear when sitting on leather is Denim !!

Not just for the obvious reason that jeans often have metal studs that can tear at the leather, but the way the denim is treated and colored.

It can often leach out and react with leather and treatments that leather has been given.

So there you have it....lots of semi naked KR drivers !!!

PS Not wishing to state the obvious but if you didn't know the word "Denim" comes from the fact that the cloth or 'serge' was first woven in Nimes in France....'Serge De Nimes'.

Also some of the first people to regularly use denim were the Genoan sailors...hence 'Jeans'

Don't all shoot me down for stating the ' bleedin obvious', but there are people out there who don't know !

More useless facts later.

Skagel, you out there? LOL! Even better, we have new 'female KR owners' here. I'm all for co-ed naked KR driving but... oh well...

Yes Lenny, in my line of work, I wear jeans nearly every day and, to date (*knocks on wood concurrently with standing on one foot with fingers crossed*), I haven't had any problems with cross-dying or color leaching.

How about the crazy idea that the King Ranch was created to fill a niche with cowboys looking for more luxurious truck. Now I may live in Texas but I spend less time on dirt roads and ranches than Man spends on the Moon.

I love this truck. I however have to have a truck that works for me. I spend alot of time at the lake (Fishing, Skiing, Jetskiing) and everytime I get in my truck from the boatramp it gets the seat all nasty looking. I know it will return to normal but these seats are pretty damn useless. I can't put a dog in the back seat or even carry home groceries because I worried the cereal box will scratch the leather.

I think to myself were these seats modeled after real saddle leather or are they make believe?

If they are modeled after saddle lather than we should be able to beat the hell out of them. You know treat them like a saddle.

If they are fake and just there for looks than I guess that fits with the whole 4X4 thing. (Most 4x4's never see 4 wheel drive or off road conditions)

If you are worried about wearing denim in your King Ranch you should be hit over the head with a golf club.

This is a truck you don't need to wear Rayon and Cashmere just to drive it.

Oh yeah and god forbid you let someone else ride in your truck. I mean putting someone in the back seat is a terrible idea

Sorry for ranting but If you worry about your truck that much than sell it or buy seat covers.

As for me I plan on driving my truck.

EEErrrr.....

I think you missed the point !

Or more likely you haven't been on this forum long enough to understand my Modus Operandi.

I often play devils advocate....though on this occasion I wasn't exactly doing that.

I actually wear denim myself occasionally in my Bentley or Aston.
(Though not when going to the theatre in London !)
...and I don't worry about the leather other than giving it the care and attention these things deserve.
I don't think for one moment that denim shouldn't be worn in a KR....or a KR not used as a truck is used.
The fact is though, that most of us here like to keep our trucks looking good despite the use they may be put to....

I was simple posting some information that I had noticed about leather care and thought some may find it interesting per se.

Only wear demin without rivets is my solution (and nothing other than my thin wallet in back pockets). If by chance I'll be "working" I just put a towel over the seat to keep it protected, just like I do for my fabric seats in the 1991 Explorer).

The leather is full grain in the seating areas (right?) so they can take a beating IF you keep them conditioned.

For what it's worth... my Bronco has leather seats, (1991 Silver Anniversary Edition) the previous owner was a rancher in Arkansas and the seating surfaces are as worn and nasty as I've ever seen leather look, the seat backs however look like brand new. I know 2 ladies who drive King Ranch editions, they usually dress up a bit but I'll be sure and tell them not to wear any pants when they drive from now on...

Just one question

(oh and sorry for not realizing your intentions. I must not be of your intellectual itelligence.)

Is there something different on the arm rest than the seats? It seems like I can put anything on the arm rest without fear.

Does your 91 explorer have an automatic tranny in it?

If so how many times have you replaced it?

My old one went through 2 in 5 years.

My '91 Explorer (purchased in Feb. 1991) has the original transmission !!!!! (current mileage: 179,650). Serviced every 25K miles (complete drain, adjustments and re-fill - and since new added a container of TriboTech SPECTRUM with every service). It has never caused me any problems (oh God - now I've cursed meself). Added TriboTech IJP to the engine oil every 60K miles and it too has been operating flawlessly - except that I've gone through 4 starters (one paid for replacement and 2 additional warranty replacements that I refused to pay FORD $125 per episode in LABOR charges and they didn't charge me - maybe because each time they R&R'd the starter under warranty it took them less than 15 minutes and they tried to bill me for 2-1/2 hours labor according to the BOOK - which I told them "NFW" and they accepted it).

The paint is shot and both front power windows have broken (not the motor but the damn cheap plastic gears that make it work). It's getting a paint job next month and then to find someone who will repair the windows without charging me what the dealership wants). I will drive it until it dies and then bury it on my property!

Thank you "SS"...I thought I was the only one who actually, "God forbid", USED my King Ranch. Up here in KC, as well as everywhere else I'm sure, I see it all, from trailer queens, to 4X2's & 4X4's "Slammed" so low they scratch the curbs and have so many accessories(?) on them you can't tell what kind of vehicle they really are. The truck, regardless of make, was built to be used, even though they seem to have lost that duty now-a-days, and have become a status symbol, like the "Hummer H2" that are so common now.

Granted, I take better care of the Castano leather than I have other interiors, but I'm definitely not afraid to get in it with clothes on! I'm VERY particular when it comes to my trucks, but, it doesn't control my life & interests. I wouldn't think of hauling a deer, or a stringer of fish, in the interior, but I wouldn't have done that with any vehicle. That's one of the main reasons I drive a truck, especially a 4X4!

Well...you certainly proved the point there then !!!!

Look, we're not getting into "I'm cleverer than you are posts" here.

As a newcomer to the forum you certainly came in strongly....and now to follow up you try sarcasm !!

We're a pretty friendly lot here but put a little thought into the content and structure of your posts and we'll all get on fine !!

Yes...sorry....as soon as I switched off the confuser I realised the
' mis attribution. ' !!!

SaddleSitting.....

Well...for a newcomer you've certainly got a nerve.

And as far as your last comment it is neither clever nor appropriate for this forum.

As far as I am concerned you are not welcome here with the present tone of your posts.

SaddleSitting:

Here's the final word. Try to get along.

You see, we're generally a pretty enthusiastic bunch that enjoy poking around and discussing everything from aeronautics to zebras with everything in between. Most all of the folks here know each other on nearly a personal basis and to come in here and lash out in a very immature manner, simply put, isn't appreciated nor will it be tolerated.

None of us here are so 'anti-truck' that we can't utilize the bed of the truck for hauling something of for towing. Get over your one-sided ego and join in with the crowd here. We're a pretty good group of folks once you open your eyes and mind rather than lashing out about something as stupid as this. The King Ranch Edition is, whether you contend to accept it or not, is only about the leather. And, further, as you may or may not have noticed, you're within the King Ranch forum. We, therefore, discuss leather on a frequent basis. It's the norm here.

We're certainly glad to have you aboard here but, if you're attitude persists, you can simply find somewhere else to 'saddlesit'. On the flip side, if you'd like to lurk and potentially enjoy some of the folks banter and/or information, please feel free to do that. If you want to join in and contribute, understand the feel of the forum, and then, and only then, post. We've never operated with a poor attitude of sorts and, having said that, I don't have any intention on letting it begin now.

Thanks for your understanding and I hope that you'll contribute to the satire and chaffy discussion which have helped oodles of other King Ranch owners feel at home.
