Dog in the Back Seat?

I've got a full-blood mutt (Dalmation/Lab) and I'd love to be able to carry her around but, being the ultra-picky guy that I am about my leather, I cringe at the thought of her paws/nails on the leather in the backseat. Unfortunately, I have the two rear buckets with the large center console.

Do any of you all allow your dog in the back? If so, what are you using to protect your seats/console?

I suppose that I could lay down the two buckets and simply cover up the console lid but, I'm still leary I suppose.

Do you all think that this would work? (link goes to orvis.com)

Any ideas? Other products?

NP Mike, I'll let you know what I figure out. I think the main problem that I'd have with that little item from Orvis is that the back seats, when laid down, aren't the same height as the console and, in addition to that, there are gaps beside the console. Granted, they are very minimal.

Says that the size is 50X52" which, according to my very crude and quick measurements a moment ago, might not be large enough. It would be close though. I'd be concerned about width honestly as it does 'hang' down and then back up to the seatbelt loops (which, of course, can be adjusted to their lowest point).

Argh... I'd really like to pack the pooch along with me but, it's appearing as though it may become exceedingly difficult. Maybe the wifey could make something that would work and be thick enough to prevent the claws from destroying the surfaces.

Oh yeah... may as well show her off while I'm talking about her huh?

OMG - she is beautiful!! the dalmatian markings on her two front paws are unbelievable.......looks like she has on dalmatian slippers........lol!!

(from a fellow dog lover and owner - I don't allow mine in my truck either - yikes - hate to think what they would do to the leather although I know they would love to ride with momma....)

THANKS LT!!

In addition to her 'socks', her chest is the same.

I know she wants to ride in the KR as she LOVES going for car rides but, naturally, she's never sat a paw inside. I'm hoping that can change.

Howdy all,
I have a great solution for either the front or back buckets that allows a KR loving pooch to ride along. I cover the seat with a Grant Sport Seat Shield and put my blue heeler, Ringo in a Easy Rider Car Harness. I purchased both from either Griot's or Stylin Concepts about a year ago and they work great in all our vehicles.

The seat cover rolls up and stores easily, is a snap to clean and was only about $22. The harness keeps the dog from moving aroung too much and really protects from injury to you or the dog during a crash or sudden stop and was less than $15. The harnesses come in 3 sizes (I think), are easily adjustable and the seat belt simply slides through a loop in the back to hold your pet in place. Ringo won't get in a vehicle without it!

Highly recommended mod for the KR owner with dogs. Seats never get scratched or dirty from Ringo.

One other alternative is seat covers from Bowser's Pet Products. I've got a rear bench in my '02, and got a "Sueded Cashew" colored full bench seat cover, that is padded and has elastic straps to hold it in place. My dogs LOVE to go for rides, the only problem I have is drool on the console, (which wipes up anyway). Bowsers has a website, but I purchased mine at "Land of Paws" here in Kansas City. Don't have to worry about claw marks, as the seat is entirely covered. The color doesn't exactly match the Castano Leather, but it looks nice. They also carry bucket seat covers, but my dogs are allowed in the back ONLY!

Thanks for those options guys. I'll have to do some research to figure out what I'm going to get...

What, if any, cons are there to the systems that you both have mentioned?

If the dog is very active, he/she might not like the harness. Mine fought it and got tangled in it when he was young, but doesn't mind it at all now that he's a year old. I also had to cover the console (front or rear) and teach him to keep his paws off the leather console lid, but that didn't take long either. He stays away from the consoles now.

The dog and the dog's personality are really the variables.

Don't leave that pretty girl dog at home RP. Ringo and I just drooled on a new King Ranch Chestnut F-250 at the dealership. What fun and no salespeople on Sunday!

Well, so far, I haven't had any cons. This cover is removable, can be thrown in the washer, but is supposed to air dry. I had originally ordered one in "Mushroom" which looked like an EXACT match, color wise, from a different supplier, but when it arrived it was a sage green color, nothing like the Castano. They only have a few colors, for both buckets and bench, but the "Sueded Cashew" that I have matches well with the rest of the interior, and has a "leather" look & feel to it.

One other thing I keep in or near my KR is a "Lint Roller" for picking up the hair that they shed. These are those "masking tape on a stick" rollers that work pretty well, and they're cheap @ WalMart or anywhere

My Chocolate Lab loves to ride in my F-250 KR. I fold up the bottom seat, pull out the cargo floor and lay a comforter over it. It also makes it easier for her to get in as it is quite a leap even with the stock lift to the back seat. I fold the comforter over the rear seat bottom and she can stand there and look out the rear slider..

Thanks again folks!!! I'm continuing my search for an item that suits all of my wants/needs. Only thing is that I have so little time to do the searching...

Thanks again for the responses and honest opinions!

I have seen doggie booties used. Have little draw strings to help to hold in place, but dog probably could pull off if it didn't like them.
