Daily Driver...?

So, I bought the KR as a 3rd vehicle. I live in Ca just south of San Francisco. We just purchase a place in Lake Tahoe and needed another 4 wheel drive car. My wife has an SUV and I have a sedan. I had the option to get another SUV, but that did not make sense to me. I then recommended we get a truck as we randomly need a pick-up from time to time. And, because this was a 3rd vehicle, I felt a truck would fit the build. With twin girls (3 yrs old) we needed the Crew Cab…once I saw the KR, game over, had to have it! THIS IS MY FIRST TRUCK.

Well, 3 weeks into ownership, I drive this car daily. My sedan sits collecting dust. I am considering saving some money and selling the sedan and driving the KR daily. What I want to know is if there is anyone out there who was in a similar situation as myself and REGRETS turning to the KR as a daily driver. Did anyone switch from a sedan to the truck, cold turkey?

I work at a software company and have no need for a truck. I drive up and down the SF bay Area, not exactly rural roads. Parking spaces seemed to be a tad narrow in these parts as well.

So, I know that I am the only one who can make this decision, however, the board has offered me tons of reading material thus far and I like to hear what you have to say/write.

Am I just under the Castano trance?

Anthony

You just say that because you have Lariat leather now... I do seem to recall a certain pilot with a house in Texas that has a relationship so strong with his dealership that he seems to think that he'll have the first 2005 production KR in the Lonestar State though...

Seems to me that that 'Texan' might have a hook/line/sinker addiction to Castano in a very similar fashion to those of us that still own some Castano....

Peculiar isn't it?

You pretty much answered your own question. If you are happy driving your KR daily, that's all that matters. I'm sure your sedan gets better mileage, is easier to park, etc., but it is not a KR. These are quality trucks and should last many years with good care/maintenance. There are some of us that don't have that choice. My KR is my only vehicle. I had a Toyota X-tra Cab that was in "Better" shape when I sold it with 175,000 miles on it, than when I got it new. I usually keep a vehicle until I get sick of it, but the dealers I've always dealt with felt bad that they couldn't give me more on a trade-in. I almost always sell outright.
Just watch those parking lot dings. ENJOY IT, that's why you bought it.

Sage advice Timber...thank you! I know I like the truck today and I am sure I will like it tomorrow, but how will I feel in 2 months? No one can answer this, I know! I just need to make the decision...I am the same way with my vehicles, the guy who buys my car gets a car in better shape than when I bought it.

I will let you know what I did...

I bought my King Ranch so I would have a nice truck paid for by the time I retire in two years. I only drive the truck on trips out of town, the rest of the time I drive an old beat up VW beetle to save on gas.

I fall in love all over each time I drive the truck. I like the way people pull up beside me at the light and take a good look at the, wishin they had one just like it.

For my money, The King Ranch is a great investment, just for the pleasure it gives me when I drive it.

For those that are reading the board...

I am sure hundreds of thousands people are awaiting my update...

What did Anthony decide to do, they ask!!!!

Well, I still have the sedan...but, I have yet to drive it in over 1 month. So, I am closer to believing that the KR is a great daily driver, even though I have no need for a truck.

That said, let me tell you how I have used the truck thus far:

1) Picked up 2 yards of tops soil from the local Garden Materials outfit (2 trips)

2) Purchase and brought home 3 HUGE planters. Saved $90 in delivery fees. Had to lower the tailgate and use the bed extender.

3) Purchased and hauled 3 very large Palm Trees, for the planters. Saved $45 in delivery fees.

4) Purchase and hauled (3) 36 inch box redwoods. Not sure of the deliver fee saved, a lot! Trucked earned his stripes that day!

5) Picked up 15 large pieces of flagstone (~500 lbs) from the local Garden Materials outfit (2 trips)

6) Purchased and hauled (11) 15 gallon plants and (1) 15 Gallon Lisbon Lemon tree. Again, saved a delivery fee of some amount.

7) 3 Trips to the dump. 1 with household items and 2 with yard refuse!
So, I never realized how much I would use the truck. I claimed that I did not 'need' a truck, however in the ~1 month of ownership, I think I should retract that statement!

Oh ya, I also conditioned the leather with the KR Saddle shop conditioner...looks and feels great!

Anthony

OK, so, you've saved enough in delivery fees in one day's workout to make a truck payment. Don't you also have the feeling of satisfaction that you've done it yourself? There is really some justification to having a truck now, isn't there? That's the main reason I drive one, to be able to use it. Now, having a King Ranch is just icing on the cake!
