Possible KR Project

First of all, let me commend you on this web forum. I stumbled on to the f150 KR forum and I was looking at some of your custom projects and products. You do great work and I am enjoy your posts. I own a 01 KR 4x4 supercrew that I love. Last week I sprung for the bfg 285 at's. It makes the truck look a little beefier.

Anyway, I had what I think was a great idea this morning. I have been looking into buying an old classic bronco (1966-1977) and completely re-doing it. I have seen several that look great when they are lifted, repainted, and have bigger tires added. Anyway, I was doing my daily intenet search for an old bronco this morning when I came up with the idea to restore the bronco to look like my KR F-150. By that, I mean to paint it in one of the kr colors (maybe az blue like mine) with the gold on the rocker and fender wells. I could buy some kr rims on ebay and perhaps some badges from rockpick. If I could find the "4x4" gold sticker that my kr has and put it on the bronco I think it would look awesome.

What do you think? The badges and the rims seem to be available, but the seats and stickers might be hard to get. What other touches should I add.

Thanks
Matt F.

P.S. for those of you who don’t know what a classic bronco looks like, here is a fine example:

how would you handle the leather? to me, that IS the King Ranch edition. You can live without the labels but not without the leather.

Leather?

I guess that is the trick. I was hoping that you guys could answer that one. Have any of you ever seen the seats for sale?

Since you are in Texas you could probably pop across the border to Mex and find simular leather.

the only option I can think of (other than the cost prohibitive option of dealer ordering) is to secure the leather in an uplohlstry form... not sure if its on a roll or is just a large square... then take that to the upholstry shop to re-do the existing Bronco seats in the new leather.

I've seen KR seats for sale on Ebay a couple of times. Check it out. I think that would make an awesome looking Bronco.

Good luck,
Ron

Thanks guys

Hey, I wonder where I could go to find wrecked KRs? I guess I could call a local salvage yard. I could use the consoles and captains chairs. It would be neat to install that overhead compass, temp gauge, and sunglass holder on the roll bar. Let me know if you have any ideas as to where I can find a totaled KR.

First and foremost, welcome aboard. We're glad to have you with us!

Secondly, the idea sounds killer. I don't think anyone in this group would be similar to alot of the Harley Davidson guys and flame you for making a 'FAKE'. In short, I think everyone here would support you and try to help you make it happen.

About your leather. I can do a bit of dredging but, as of last year, the King Ranch hides were acutally manufactured in Tennessee according to my contact at LEAR (manufac. of the interior). The leather was produced in cooperation with King Ranch to their specifications and under their supervision I was told.

I don't know where the tannery was located but, I'd be willing to bet I could find it.

Let us know if we can help you out in any way/shape/form and again, welcome to the King Ranch forum here at f150online.com!!

Thanks RockPick

I have been enjoying your posts. Thanks for the encouragement. I never even thought that what I was planning on could be construed as a "fake." I guess I do now. I would never take a regular f150 and try to pass it off as a KR. I think that taking an EB (Early Bronco) and painting it to look like my 2001 KR 4x4 would be a cool tribute to the progress that Ford has made over the years. The two vehicles are sooo far apart in years and style that I there will be no confusion as to my intent. Surely there is no chance that anyone would think that I was trying to pass it off as an original KR. This is a lot of thought for a restoration project where I have not even purchased the EB.

That being said, if anyone thinks that it is in poor taste to use the theme, do me a favor and post your reasons. Hey, Im pretty tough skinned, so don't hold back.

Thanks to all for the ideas, contacts, and support so far.

Matt F.

P.S. I have found a great EB for $2000. I just need to go check it out to see if it is ok. Wish me luck.

Thanks K-O-T-R

Thanks for the contact information. If you dont mind, keep your eyes open for a wrecked KR. Parts from one of those will really make my theme restoration work.

Since the KRs are so rare I believe that it would be almost impossible to find a wrecked one. You could total yours and use the interior. Just kidding!!
