Question Plastic surrounding windows, etc.

Well, my King is 10 days old now and I've got 1100 miles on it. Nice road trip up to Jacksonville over the weekend to see my Indy Colts get upset by the Jaguars. Got a big thumbs up from a Chestnut KR driver on the way southbound on Florida's Turnpike. Felt good to be one of the club.

As the gentleman from Montana said, the Black is cool but man am I gonna become one with the carwash. 10 straight days of rain and wind on the east coast of Florida surely hasn't helped.

I have one concern that I'd like some advice on; the plastic lining on the bottom of the windows and the tailgate handle. All over my beatiful truck, its stained very badly, all white and seemingly faded. Is there a specific cleaner available for this plastic to keep it dark black and new looking?

As per usual, thanks in advance. Pictures are still forthcoming because I haven't got a chance to take them when the truck is actually clean.

When you say 'staining'... what did the staining? What does it look like? Do you have any pictures?

I have some tricks up my sleeve but, I need more description.

What RP said.

Also you might care to get ready a short length of rope, a packet of Jello, and some baby oil.

OOps that was the OTHER problem !

Esquire59,

I think I know what you might be talking about. Just like RP and Len said, you need to give a little more info. I had the same problem with mine, it came from when I got my vehicle washed and waxed. The sloppy company waxed those plastic areas (I WON'T EVER GO BACK) and left white wax stains. I bitched and complained when I saw the guy do it and told them it was going to turn white but they didn't listen. When its wet you can't see it, but as soon as it dries, its white again. To make a long story short after they paid me $150.00 for the mistake, I took it to another detailer who used a solution that got the wax up and it looks brand new again. I have a standing Fri/Sat detailing appointment with them. Hope this helps and if this IS your problem when I see the detailer this Friday I will get the name of the solution. Hope this helps!

Thank you, Romello, this is precisely the problem. When they detailed my truck last week when I bought it, they got some wax on these plastic parts as well as the tailgate handle. I took it back and had them fix it. It was black and shiny but then after it rained a few times, the water stained it. Mine have almost a tie-died effect between white, black, and gray. I have a 2001 EB Expedition with the same linings but they're fine.

To be more detailed to the other posters, I honestly don't know what the part(s) are called. I’m referring to the black, plastic covers/moldings/linings below the windows on our trucks, about 3" tall. I feel ignorant, but I just don’t know what this part is called for specific reference. Romello?

Romello, I'd love to have that solution from your detailer whenever you get it.

I've always just called that part the 'window surround'. Heck, I don't know the technical term either.

I guess, more specifically, what we were looking for was what wsa causing the white build up on that stuff... you obviously answered that.

To be perfectly honest, there are a multitude of ways to remove it.

My first suggestion would be WD-40 and a toothbrush. Spray the toothbrush with the WD and then work it into the plastic.

Keep in mind that the WD **WILL** remove the wax on your paint as well so don't just spray it on.

If you get it on your paint, rewax that area.

Once done, wash the area with car shampoo and water and apply a water based protectant like Vinylex.

That is some stout advice RP. Just had the beauty washed yesterday and its white/gray this morning. I'm not sure its all wax, its more of a general problem all around the truck. Looks like I'll have to ruin a toothbrush for a good cause.

Another suggestion that I use is peanut butter for the wax on plastic thing. My dog loves it, cause when I am done putting the pb on the plastic rear handle, she gets to lick it off my hand.

The peanut butter will, indeed, mask the problem but, unfortunately, it will not make the white go away.

I'll still owe y'all pictures of the truck and this problem. I had a cold this weekend and felt like I had one foot in the grave and the other on a banana peel. Quickly getting better, so I'm hoping to take a couple dozen pictures this weekend. Of course, now, I'll have to her all detailed up again.
