Question CD Changer Removal?

I have a 2002 KR w/ a CD Changer in the Center Console. I am installing a new Pioneer Headunit and want to replace the factory Changer w/ a Pioneer 6-disc. Does anyone know the procedure for removing the factory changer? Does anyone have any experience installing an aftermarket changer in the same location?

Thanks,
Bobby

Generally speaking, it'll take all of 10 minutes (if that long) to uninstall the changer. It's held in there inside of a 'clam shell' type of holder. The holder is screwed to the inside passenger side wall of the console and also has a couple of screws at the bottom of that holder.

Once you've removed those screws (4 I believe), it'll lift right out. You'll have to unplug the unit obviously.....

As far as adding the new one, you'll have to run a new line (IP Bus or similar) from the console to where your new head unit is located. I would recommend leaving the existing CD changer cord in the console JUST IN CASE you decide to put it back in when you sell/trade or if you need a power point for something electrical in the future as the cd changer is an 'always hot' power source for the vehicle.

G'luck. I took mine out and sold it to another member and haven't missed it a single day...

Just a suggestion, the head unit that you purchase; make sure it's XM compataible because you might want to go that route one of these days and it's VERY nice to be able to control the XM through the HU rather than an external remote or similar...

No problemo.

I noticed that you've posted a couple of times. Don't be a stranger. We're a pretty friendly bunch of folks...

I replaced mine with a Clarion 6 disc changer that works with my head unit. Luckily they were exactly the same size, so I could use the same brackets and everything. What is the real pain is running the new harness. I had to remove the front passenger seat in order to run the harness under the carpet, as well as removing the entire front console. Simply removing the old changer is easy, but running the new one is a big hassle.

Like Rockpick said just to remove it is easy enough. What i did to run the ne cable is take off the little black cover that is on the top of the middle of the "hump". Be carefull not to force or it will break(43 bucks later at the junkyard, i should know) any way. Then you have enough carpet to play with. Just remove the cupholders in the front of the console and loosen the two bolts holding the console to the floor. Now that you have done all of that you can just run a wire clotheshanger under the carpet and the insulation under the carpet to the front where you removed the black cover. Tape the new cable to the clotheshanger and pull it back through. You have to loosen the console so that the plugs on the new cable can fit under.

Hope this helps.

Also I would suggest getting a changer that is mp3 format acceptable. That way you can put up to 180 mps files on your burnt cd and you can everlasting musical enjoyment.

You know I got thinking about this post and wondered to myself, why not go with a multi-disc in dash unit? I guess I may be lucky, some may say unlucky, but I have the 6-disc in dash factory unit in my KR and I absolutely love it. If you were going to put an aftermarket unit in anyway, why not look for the multi disc unit? That way, you wouldn't have to remove the changer, just unhook it, and if you ever sell the truck you can put the factory head unit back in and hook the changer back up. Just a thought on my part.
