Hard top cover or tool box

Im torn between getting a Hard top cover for the bed or a tool box. I think both look good. Any opinions out there? What do you guys like? Thanks

ok so I am not a "guy" but I do have an opinion. I like the look of both, but think the lid can be more secure. Reason being is that with a lid nobody knows what is inside the bed. With a tool box everyone knows the chances are great that there are hundreds of dollars worth of tools inside. If you really need a tool box you can still get one even with a hard lid.

oh and welcome to our gang.

Question: What kind of truck do you have? We must have details.
color, engine, body, options, drive, etc.

depends on if you want to use it for a truck or just a car that sits really high off of the ground.

I would go with the lid and you can always secure a toolbox of some sort to the hooks in the bed. I say this since the Supercrews have a shorter bed already adding a toolbox is just going to make it even smaller. Also like Sarah said it is more secure they don't know what is in there with a lid, but with a toolbox they are pretty certain they are going to have some nice gear to take home.

Thanks for the welcome "guys" and I use the term loosely. I ordered an '03, 5.4l, 2wd, tow pkg, pwr moon roof, 3.55 lmtd slip, charcol blue and cant wait to get it. It will be used to tow my 19ft bass boat and tow me to and fro work. Im leaning toward a hard lid right now.

Not to start a color war here, but nice choice in colors.

I have an ARE lid on my Tomas and I love the look of it, but I saw a truck the other day and the lid lifted up not just at the tailgate, but the whole lid. I thought that was great. wish I stopped and talked to the guy about it so I could tell ya who makes them.

Just a note on getting a hard lid for the new KR. Because you chose the Charcoal blue it seems that a lot of us with this color who went with a hard lid seem to have a lot of problems with the paint. I had to send my lid back three times to have the paint fixed.

ok shutting up now....sorry I tend to babble at times........ok fine most of the time.....geesh...

That will look a lot like what I have, except you will have the chrome step bars and some minor interior changes. And not to mention mine is heavily modded.

I have never had a problem with the paint on my Leer cap (knock on wood). It matches perfectly too. It matches better than the stupid touchup paint from Ford does.

Sarah...

Despite my New year's resolution not to post any more on this forum

(Sighs of relief all round North America, especially where RP happens to be )...

Something you said puzzled me.
About your lid only lifting from the tailgate. I checked out your gallery thinking you had something different from most of us, but no, it works just the same.
So what do you mean by saying "The whole lid lifts up"?

Do you mean it ALL lifts up parallel to the truck body....I don't understand how that would work......anyone enlighten me ??

if you are thinking of the hard lid, my uncle has a lid on his dodge durango 4dr that has side lid openings near the front much like a split tool box and the rear opens like a normal lid. it's very cool although i'm not sure of the manufacturer.

Pkagel, I think you may have spent too many hours lying in a puddle of VW Motor oil, huffing fumes from spent cans of starting fluid... Either that, or you've killed too many brain cells napping next to the reactor core again!

Durangos don't have "lids" last time I checked.... OK, Maybe someone made a special one out there in Cali, but none of them come from the factory like that... Maybe you mean a 4-door Dakota? Time to put the carb cleaner down and get a breath of freshly-polluted so-cal smog.

sorry, sorry, i meant dakota. please forgive me my transgressions. joe is right, much too many fumes have entered my lungs from the vw engines. never the less, it was a totally cool lid for those who are into such things. i prefer to use the bed myself for hauling junk so i'm saving up for a kranch f250 psd as long as i can get it w/o that silly wood on the inside. we'll see when the 04's come out.

to bad for you, but the wood trim is standard on the KR. I am sure the dealership would be happy to switch the trim from another SD at no charge since they can turn around and charge the next guy for the upgrade.

Get the fiberglass cover

I had a tool box on my 98 lariat and someone broke into it and stold everything about 2700.00 in tools.

I have the A.R.E. fiberglass cover on my 2003 kr and really like it and have had no break in issues with it.
