Red face Newbie...looking at a 97

Got a guy that wants $850 for a 97 4.6L Std Cab 2x4, as is, not running. The truck sat for almost a year and wasn't started. His 25 year old kid owns the truck but it's on his property. He replaced the battery and starter solenoid and right now the solenoid clicks and thats all she wrote. I know for a fact the battery cables need to be replaced due to really bad corrosion. With 140k on the clock is she worth my time?

I am an at home mechanic so the work doesn't scare me I just don't want to end up with a trashed engine or trans once it is running. I'm thinking in the gate I need a new Pos. cable and starter but is this really worth a gamble at $850.

That would be a gamble. Hard to say. You don't know if it will even turn over much less start and run. You know nothing about the transmission. Could all be great or could be junk. They parked it for some reason.
