Unhappy Broken shift **** on automatic shifter

The shift **** with overdrive button has broken on my 2000 F150. The break is apparently where the **** assembly screws on or otherwise attaches to the shift lever. Has anyone had this happen and what are the details of the fix? The **** is dangling by the four wires. Looks like I need the whole outer shell/button assembly, minus the electricals. Your help/advice much appreciated.

Sorry, I have no idea how to fix this, but thought replying would bring this thread back to the top of the list where it can be seen again.

I had the same problem on my wife's Mercury Villager. Same design as the one on the F150. I just glued it back on with rubber cement.

An update from BikeHauler--

Took truck to Ford dealer for the windshield wiper moter cover recall, and service advisor said that automatic trans lever **** breakage was covered by warranty. They fixed it at no charge, since mileage was well within warranty limit. The entire shift lever including **** was replaced--not just the broken ****. Whether the dealer received more dough from Ford for this type of repair or if replacing **** only was infeasible due to the wires, I'll never know but do know they gigged Ford pretty good for the repair. Lesson learned: exercise your warranty rights at every opportunity. Certainly was better and stronger than gluing.
