Column Shifter OD button sliding off

Column Shifter OD button sliding off
I did a search on this, and came up empty handed. Hoping someone might be able to chime in and help!
I have a 99 F-150 with a 5.4 / auto trans, and the plastic column shift **** on the steering column (that has the overdrive button and indicator built in) keeps sliding off of the metal shift rod. If I force it, I can slide it back in place, however after a few days of use it starts sliding off again. I am concerned eventually it might yank / strain the wires for the overdrive button. Has anyone else experienced this? is the **** press fitted in place?
I am unsure how to disassemble it to fix, as if I try and slide it apart I risk breaking wires.
Thanks in advance!
