You may not like the answer but, owning an upholstery shop, I usually get $900 to $1000 for recovering the front buckets in leather. Much cheaper than ordering ready made covers from the stealer plus someone still has to install them. The leather I use is Italian hides and much softer than factory.

with all the livestock in the US, you'd think there would no need to buy Italian leather hides

The thing is, these ARE American hides. It's just that they are sent to Italy to be tanned and sent back . The price is still as good or better than American tanned hides. Italians are the best for their tanning process.

Example of my work:

leather

The leather from leatherseats.com is Katzkin leather. I used it in my 02 Ranger
and the seats still look & feel great. I highly recommend them. You can get the covers & do it yourself with a little help. I did & it wasn't too hard, just time consuming & somwhat agravating.

i am getting my lariat 01 screw completely redone as my leather in the front is quite worn out at the moment from myself and my dog...i got quoted 1050 to redo the seats front and back with Roadwires, because katzkin doesnt have the pattern to do the 01-03 screws with leather from the factory..something about the bolstering and patterning of the seats is different and there patterns are designed to use when replacing cloth seats with leather on my particular model...this was from the most reputable auto upholstery place in town, its in fact the same place that the chevy, toyota, and FORD dealership use when someone wants to add leather to their new vehicle
