Buying a Cluster question?

I bought a speedometer cluster for my 04 fx4 off the internet from this salvage yard. and my mom is freaking out saying that they will report it to the state even though i didnt buy it in my state, they dont have my vin and it has the same miles as my old one did. All they have is my credit card number. They didnt say anything about reporting it or anything. Is she over reacting, i mean people by s*** from salvage yards all the time.

How does that work. Can you just replace your cluster? I have the old body style, is it just "plug and play" (hehe) or do you have to do something else

what are you looking to do? add a lightning or harley cluster (97-03)? in that case, you may need a new pcm. however, if you are looking to add a cluster from the new body style, i have no idea if that is even possible...

I had the original instrument cluster replaced in my '04 STX with an FX4 cluster. It is not a plug and play. The management system in your truck must be programed that it has a different cluster installed before everything will work correctly. I bought a new one and had to give them the mileage on my truck so that the new cluster could be programed with the correct mileage. It cost me $283.00 with an exchange which inclueds installation and programing. Even if your truck is out of warranty, a Ford dealer will not install a new cluster without the correct mileage. That is unless you know saomeone.

If you're replacing with the same cluster as what you have now, no problem doing it. It will be a plug and play. If you do it thru a dealer, yes, they need vin# and mileage. We call them in to R.T. Grimm and they program a rebuilt unit with the correct mileage and other info they get from your vin#. Takes 2 days to get unless they're backordered. They do most of the american cars and trucks.

So I would need to get that stuff programmed if I am wanting to get a new cluster that has a tac on it?
