2003 door panels

I have a 2003 Lariat and the leather steering wheel is showing its age and door panels have a second color armrest/handle, switch surround, and then a large panel that goes behind those and up to almost the top. The panel (covered in vinyl) is fine but the vinyl itself has slipped and stretched itself so that I now I have loose "bubble" running the full top of the panel. It isn't noticeable to most people but it is to me! I am very much in desire of covering the panel in black leather and getting a black leather steering wheel to match. Has anyone ever taken this panel off and reattached it? It is attached by 10-15 plastic pegs that stick through the whole door panel and were melted flat when constructed. I am thinking of a sharp chisel to cut through them or else grind them down flat or something. Any experience? Ideas? Suggestions?
