The darn headliner on my '97 Super Cab is falling down. It started at the front 2 years ago. I just stapled that up near the windsheild. You couldn't see the repair, and it lasted 2 years. Now it's starting to come down over the passenger's head in the swooped area. It's drum tight and gets bigger every day. A new liner with board is over $600 from Ford I know it can't be repaired without changing the cloth. Does anyone have any insight on doing this job? Links? Glue reccomendations? I do have professional spray equipment available to me.

I had this happen to my car back in the mid 90's when in my ignorant youth used a solvent based cleaner on it.

It won't make it new again but a just a thin coat of arisol spray adhesive should get it stuck back up there with a minimum of mess. It worked for my old car, however I didn't have it too much longer. I'm not sure how it would stand up to repeated summer heat in a vehicle.

 

I would try and see if you can find one in a junk yard somewhere, if not then take it down (board and all) and take your time with it and reattach it with a heavy duty spray adhesive. I've done it before it just takes time and a couple people with smoothe patient hands to get it done good and rite.

 

Here is what I've found out. The job is not that awful. You have to scrub off the foam from the carboard backer. Leaving a little glue behind is ok. Lay the liner material onto the cardboard. Fold back half the headliner onto itself. Spray the headliner and cardboard with wellwood contact cement from a spray gun. It comes out stringy and won't soak the materials too much. Allow it to dry. Carfully smooth the glued half down. Some people use a coffee mug so they don't leave finger marks. Repeat for the other half.

The repair materials are less than $40. A local trim shop wants almost $200 to do this job. This place is close to my home and should have the exact replacement color http://www.duboisfabrics.com/
Joanne Fabrics has headliner material, but they didn't have a grey light enough to match my truck. The contact cement is about $10 from Home Depot. The material for a supercab costs about $25.

JGG I have done that in the past. It is a very short term repair. The reason the liner falls is that the foam starts to degrade. It is not strong enough for a durable long term repair.

I'll try to take some pictures and post them, as I'm sure others will have this issue in the near future.
