Speedometer lights

Need a little help here. One of the lights went out behind my speedometer---how do I get back there to replace it? Is this one of those bonehead rediculously easy efforts, or do I have to remove alot of plastic? I have a '02 XLT Screw 4X$.

Thanks,

Tim C.

Go grab a haynes manual as it will make it easier for you to do, but yes it is pretty simple.

Essentially:

Pull the trim piece that looks like a semi-circle over the stering column that lies flat against the cluster.

Pull the headlight switch. If it has a small opening at the base of the light switch then pry it out with a small flathead and disconnect the plugs.

Unscrew the cluster surround from the main dash (four bolts above the cluster face, I think it's four)

Then you can see the bolts that hold it in place and the screws that hold the face onto the cluster.

It's actually really easy, it will most likely take you less than ten minutes to get to it once you can see the photos. Five more to change the bulb (Change ALL of them to save yourself another hassel in a month) and ten to put it all back in.

Good luck to you

Just changed four myself

Hi,
Just bought my F-150, and had to change so many little things that the last owner didn't bother to change. The dash was so dim @ night because of dead lights, so I got a few bulbs from my dealer and dove in. Man, this was the worst vehicle for changing instrament bulbs I have ever owned. You do have to take most of the drivers dash apart to get behind the cluster, and for my two tone dash,it was all the dak colored stuff. A pair of pliars or small vice-grips were the best tools to unscrew and replace the bulb holders because of the limited space. I only wish I had known there were so many idiot lights burned out too, as I would have changed the half dozen or so that are burned out at the same time too! I will save those for next time a guage light fails. I also figured there was two or three out, good thing I got four as I ended up needing all of them, but now I can see everything while driving in the dark. If I remember right, there are six instrament light at least, so have a few on hand . I do love this truck, nicest one I have ever owned, and will be asking so many questions from the very helpful group I see posting on here.
