Ash Tray Rattle

I've reviewed many messages on rattles ... but I have a rattle coming from the ashtray. I have confirmed this location. If I open the ashtray, the rattle goes away. I do not smoke in the truck, and I don't particularly like riding around with the ashtray open and providing the obligatory explanation to passengers.

Ideas on a resolution are appreciated.

Many thanks,

Dismas

I had the same problem. I took the truck back to the dealer and the service manager said it was known issue and an hour later I got the truck back and the problem was resolved. The reciept said something about insulation behind the ash tray. I hope the problem doesn't return.

Well unfortunately my warranty has long expired. The notorious ash tray rattle comes from the bottom of the ash tray. Fixing this is actually quite simple. There's a dash trim removal procedure on this board that shows you how to remove the trim around the radio. Once the trim is removed, you can unscrew the two screws to the ash tray. Lift the ash tray out. There should be 3 tabs located on the bottom of the ash tray. These 3 tabs go into 3 holes. What you want to do is put some weather stripping foam (for doors and such, cheap at walmart or whatever hardware store) between the 3 tabs. Once you have done that, just put back into it's original location. You might find that you have to press down about to squish the foam so that you can put the screws back in. This foam tension that is created will alleviate the rattles you've been experiencing. It really doesn't have anything to do with the ash tray door but for good measure i put some small squares of the same weather stripping foam between the door and the tray, so when you close it you also get the same tension. The rattle is just caused by manufacturing tolerances where the 3 tabs meet the 3 holes. I will take some pictures when i get the chance. It's really quite simple. Do a search for "dash removal" for the trim removal procedure. It's a wonderful pictorial.

I just took mine in today for the same problem. It drives me crazy. They said it was a little rubber stopper thats inside there somewhere. He said they come loose all the time. I don't know how to go about fixing it they just ordered a whole new peice. I'll get the price on it when it comes in and let you know.

My dealer ordered me a new one. I just have to get in there so he can replace it. Same thing though, only rattles when it is closed. Good Luck.
