Question Overhead consoles

Did an extensive search regarding overhead consoles and I'm still unclear about a possible conversion. It seams that a console became available in F150's in 2000 and some here want to install one in a 1999 model, but no mention of adding to a 98! My question is were they available in Expy/Navigators/Excursions (assuming they were built) in 1998? If so, perhaps a trip to the boneyard may produce a factory model. I would like the full length console with the temp/compass features. Is anyone aware of the probabality of this add-on? My last resort would be an after-market model. Thanks in advance for any help. Dennis

The only problem you will have is you have to replace the headliner as well. The headliner in the 2000-01 have a contour moulded in for the overhead console.

Check out the overhead consoles listed in the Sears Automotive Catalog. They are manufactured by a company in Minnesota. I had one installed on my '97 F150 and it was really nice. The fabric on the console was an exact match to the headliner material on my '97.

ragarm, actually the Shelf-It does come in a console design as well. You can buy a flat shelf, or a shelf with a center console piece for a little more tiny storage. I don't know if this what you're looking for, but it might work for ya.

Mr. Airbag Sir (and I'm sure your wife does not go by Ms. Airbag, eh? )

What I meant was, I have the overhead console (with the eyeglass holder, thermometer and compass, etc.) Will the shelf unit work around this?

Or did I just misunderstand you?

Thanks guys/gals! Pondering the Steelhorse shelf however I don't think it's really what I want. I lean towards original equipment whenever possible. Don't like that "pink flamingo" look! Will keep looking. Let's keep this post alive! Tx, Dennis

have you seen or tried the Shelf-It product from SteelHorse? it bolts into your existing visor holes and it's really strong. i have one, it's cool - although it doesn't give you a lot of room, it's more than before. you can still use your visors with it, too. However, 2 negatives - it cuts down on vision, and the tiny plastic piece in the middle where your visors attached remains, and you can't really hide it. hope this helped.

Question

Hey Airbag!

That Steelhorse Shelf-It...does it work with the overhead console?

I have a 2000 F150 ext-cab. As far as I know the 2001's have the same console. Don't know a thing about Ford's 4X4 station wagon, if it has the same console as the trucks or not.

Thumbs up

Thanks, that's interesting! Never thought about the consoles from the Villagers and the othe minivans or station wagons. Will check them our also. I wonder if LMW (the Expy console people) sell O/H consoles?

Re "Ford's 4X4 station wagon" That's the nickname we gave to the SUV's up here in McMurray.

I have done research as well into this. Just ordered a plain console. I have a 99 f150. The head liner should not be a problem, but the size of the sun visors might be. I have yet to find a junk yard that has any. All the after market ones suck. As far as I know they are standard in 2000 and up.
