Question Rearview Mirror

I just received a billet mirror and I need to know how to remove the stock one. There is some type of cover that covers the retaining screw, any ideas how this comes off?

I just looked this up on my service CD. Apparently Ford makes aspecial tool to remove the mirror. If you look at the bottom of the mirror bracket, under the cover you are refering to, you will see a slot. There is a retaining clip inside the slot that must be released while gently pulling up on the mirror and it will come off. There is NO screw, it just clips in place. I would just drop by the dealer and have them use the tool to pull off the mirror

Is the special tool a must? I need to relocate my mirror, too.

unless you want to replace your front windshield i'd let the dealership or any window repair shop do the exchange. hind sight is always 20/20 if you know what i mean. if you pull on that mirror and your windshield cracks you'll kick yourself. just my 2 cents

I didn't explain what I plan to do. Once the mirror is off the metal thing that is glued to the windshield, I am going to leave it there. I will glue another one just above it and attach the mirror to that.

My question was about detaching mirror from the metal: if a wire can press the internal clip or something along that line.

Thanks for the caution. I will be extra careful.
