Post manual shifter ****

Hey! Could anybody out there tell me how to remove the stock shifter ****? I've tried twisting / unscrewing... won't budge. Tried taking off the shift pattern insert hoping to find a nut to remove, all I found is an odd-looking plastic piece.

Suggestions (short of blow-torch or plasma cutter!)

Thanks!

The **** is not screwed on, it is pressed on.
There are splines on the shaft. Replacing it with an aftermarket **** would take a bit of creativity.

I did the same as the previous poster on my 98.I found than vice grips, twisting and lifting up will work.It did take alot more effort than I thought it would.

Cool

Thanks, guys... I managed to get it off using a tip I got on another thread on this board. I slipped a crescent wrench underneath it and smacked straight up on the wrench with a hammer. The **** popped right off. Bad news is that shaft is too darned fat (5/8" if I recall) to fit any aftermarket shift ***** I can find with out modifications to either the shaft or the ****. Sure won't fit the 8-bal I had picked out... Ooops!

Any suggestions? BTW, the factory **** went right back on and still fits very snugly.
