Passenger Airbag

I have a 99 F-150. I was driving home with my youngest daughter in the front seat in her carseat. I turned the passenger air bag off because of her being so young. I started the truck and about 15 seconds later, the airbag light went off instead of it staying on. I turned the truck off and then back on again hoping it was just a glitch. It went back out again with the airbags turned off. The owners manual says I should take it to a dealer. I have also heard that it is expensive to get fixed. Is there anything else I can do to fix it myself? I would like to take it to the dealer as a last resort. Any advice would be appreciated.

it may be expensive... but check your warranty booklet that came with the manual.

restraint systems (seatbelst and airbags) have a different warranty (like emmissions do)

Im not sure if its 5 or 10 years (don't have mine in front of me)
