Lightbulb What I've learned about replacing seats

I have a '99 XL that came equipped with a standard one-piece bench. I wanted to replace it with a 60/40 split bench, which I did yesterday. Here is what I've learned in the process - maybe I can help you avoid my mistakes.

1) Split bench seat for an extended cab truck will NOT fit in a standard cab.

2) The holes for the 60/40 seat are in the floor already. You have to uncover them and pull out the plugs. However, they are not threaded - you have to thread them yourself with the bolts. It is hard work.

3) You'll need a total of 3 of the larger seatbelt floor bolts to install a 60/40, which means get one from the junkyard or visit your local dealer to get one more.

4) Make sure the junkyard or whoever sells you the 60/40 gives you the lap belt. Your existing lap belt will not work with the split bench. The new lap belt attaches with the same bolt that holds down the center rear leg of the seat.

Have fun! I sure didn't!

at least you survuved this project

sounds like it coulkd have been much worse.

Question for you... was the 60/40 from the same model year? If it was different I could see that affecting bolts and seatbelts.
For example, the '99 60/40 is very different from the '98 60/40 on the top (different padding, different arm rest). Not sure if the structure is different (this is just a guess on my part)

I say that because I would think that Ford would want some consistancy on the assembly line (universal seat fit, same seat belts etc)

The 60/40 from the extended cab was from a 2000 model year. On the 60/40 I ended up with (the one that fit) - I'm not sure what model year that came from, but it's my understanding that at least the 99s and 2000s are interchangeable as long as both are standard cabs or both are extended. Other years might work too, possibly right up until they went with the most recent body style change, but that's mostly a guess on my part.
