Removing Window Tint
Removing Window Tint
I've got 5 year old window tint on my windows and it's starting to look pretty shabby... bubbles, scratches, etc. Anyways, I want to remove the tint from my windows myself, then take the truck somewhere to get re-tinted. Has anyone ever removed tint themselves? It seems like a pain to do because it's been baked on for so long. Windex and a razor blade?
Been there, done that. If I had it to do again, I would pay someone to do it in a heartbeat.
If the tint shop you select quotes you $50 or less for removal of old tint then pay them. Trust me. It sucks.
It can be done, requires a razor blade and some patience. They sell some spray stuff marketed as "tint remover" at Wal Mart and some auto part stores, but I found that a little vinegar mixed with distilled water worked much better..... just get an edge started and squirt it down in as you drag the razor blade thru, its more of a lubricant than anything but it sort of re-activates teh hardened glue on the tint and allows it to release easier sometimes.
It took me the better part of a day and two boxes of razor blades to stip tint from a 1995 Thunderbird with 6 year old tint.
Once stipped... clean windows with denatured alcohol on a lint free rag for best results.

My friend owns a tint shop and this is what he does to remove tint. if you lucky you can pull up a corner and the entire sheet of tint should pull off in one piece isf its a quality tint. otherwise get out the razor blades and scrape once dose use 409 kitchen degreaser to remove the glue
