Smoke Smell

I just picked up my 01 super crew, advertised and the sales man told me it was a non smoker. When I picked it up it smelled, well not new, but not like smoke either.

So I had the carpet steam cleaned this morning and they did an Ozone treatment. It has helped a bunch but there is still a funk. Kinda like a Motel 6 smell.

I was thinking about burning some good incense in the truck and also possible replace the headliner since that it the only part they can't clean.

Anyone else have any ideas on how to rid this machine of the smoke smell ? It's EXACTLY the truck I want so I want to try and make this work.

P.S. YES I will be visiting with the dealer on Monday, time to be comped $$$

Thanks

Just mu $.02 here, but I wouldn't burn any incence in there. The resins and other solids in any kind of smoke stick to fabrics and other surfaces leaving odors and even some discoloration.

Something you could try on the headliner (and other cloth surfaces) is a product called Febreeze, I think that's how you spell it.
You spray it on and leave it. It does a pretty good job of eliminating odors. It's household stuff so most any store should have it in the cleaning aisle. It works on all kinds of stuff.

I'd agree with fireman on both points - the smoke from the incense will probably last a lot longer than the good scent. Also, febreeze is a good product, and they now make a version specifically for autos. I think wal-mart carries it in the auto section.

In my own truck, I like to use Ozium "new car smell" spray - as suggested by someone else on this forum. They should also have this one in the auto dept. at wal-mart. I really like the clean, sanitized scent ozium leaves - spritz a few shots at the front and back floorboards and let 'er sit overnight with the windows/doors closed. I'm always impressed with the scent the next morning.

Let us know how it goes

I'd definately try the Febreeze first...

I third the motion that the incense may cause problems that you're not anticipating...

Hey Graphic, I forgot about the Ozium stuff. I used to use that and remember it working well also.
I never knew they made the Febreeze just for autos, cool!

some progress

Thanks guys for all the suggestions. I did use a whole bottle of Fbreeze last night on my rig. It wasn't the version for autos, I will get some tomorrow and or try the ozium stuff.

I am considering replacing the carpet, headliner and having the seats taken apart and recovered.

They must of smoked with the windows up as some of the seat areas are discolored.

Good thing is I have a cousin with a body shop and I can get all the parts on the cheap.

I'll keep you posted....

Thanks again

Patrick

Patrick,

I just got rid of the funk smell coming from the vaccuum the other day by spraying a stream of lysol into the suction tube while it was on. Worked like a charm eliminating all odors. Thought it might be worth a shot at getting into the ducts and ventilation system on your truck. Be warned I haven't actually done this on the truck. My guess is you'd either want to find the internal air intake and put the AC on recirc (or MAX) then spray or set to regular AC (pulls in fresh outside air) and spray towards the intake from the outside intake. Sorry I'm not sure exactly where the intakes are but maybe someone else can chime in.

By the way I'm about 10 miles south of you in North Austin/620.

Matt

Before you start spraying all kinds of stinky stuff in your truck you should clean the headliner with a foam cleaner and have the seats and carpets shampooed properly. Then spray an odor counteractant in at the air intake just below the windshield with the fan running.Proper cleaning will get rid of at least 90% of the smell and the counteractant will take care of the rest.

i believe the air condition intake (at least for max ac) is on the pasenger side under the dash, cuz sometimes i spray cologne down there to freshen the smell of my truck, because it sends it through the vents...hope that helps

Miss that NEW car smell?

Mix a little vanilla extract (from the cooking/spice isle of your local supermarket) with some water (from your local faucet) and spray it on the carpets. You'll be amazed!

They make products that remove the smoke smell from autos, my father used it for his car and it worked. I don't remember the name of the product, but I can find out for you if you want to know.

1)throw some baking soda on the floor, seats and the headliner, let it sit for a while, and vacuum it up with a good powerful shop vac.
2) get a plastic bowl, put some baking soda in it, and cover with saran wrap, poke holes in it and put under seat. it will eventually suck up all the smell.

it worked in my parents house when my uncle came up( he smoked in the new house!

i think i will definitly agree with the febreeze, but i do also no that you might have to shampoo the carpets and seats again. when a place details a vehicle they do a good job,but sometimes it could be done better i think. you might have to spend sometime shampooing the interior again. one more idea about the headliner. you cant shampoo it because you cant soak it with water but you might want to try taking pail of warm water with some simple green and use a towel to clean the liner . just keep ringing out the towel in the pail(you will be surprised how dirty the water will get) just an idea that might help.

i always just leave it parked outside with the windows down. why pay for ozone when it is free. this has helped me with my odors. I also have vent visors, so it makes it less of a hassle in case it rains.

i would try this before spending a lot if money on chemicals.
