3rd brake light gasket replacement?
3rd brake light gasket replacement?
Hi All,
I have a used 3rd brake light that I am experimenting with (buddy of mine did some tint film on it). The gasket is a little chewed up so I'd like to replace it before I install the light.
Any hints on replacing this gasket? I assume I will need to scrape off the old one to get a clean surface...then what? Make a new one from some stock gasket material? If so, what kind? What kind of adhesive? (RTV..other?)
Or am I overcomplicating it and they sell replacement gaskets?
Obviously I'm guessing here...any help is appreciated!!
Thanks,
Mike

I think you would have better luck finding it at a hardware store.

When I tinted a spare 3rd brake light I had I replaced the old gasket with some rubber weatherseal I picked up for a few bucks at Homedepot. I also used a little bit of rtv on the corners between the weatherstrip and brake light. No leaks what's so ever.
Got the idea from an old leaky third brake light thread posted few years ago.
Here's the stuff..

Yea i had the same issue on my f150 excep i had water pouring into my truck whenver i washed it or nature washed it. Took me a while to find the source but i eventually removed the corroded gasket and put a thick *** weatherstripping around it and it looks good. You cant even tell its weatherstripped. but i had bought my stripping from Advanced Auto.
