Blackening Non-Harley/Non-FX2 Lights Help. 2009+

I've been wanting to order myself some Harley lights for my truck since I bought it, but they're just too expensive. It looks like the FX4 has adopted them this year, but the price is still about $800 bucks for the pair, and that doesn't include tail lights. I might even like the look of the FX2 stock lights even better than the Harleys, and they probably cost less but I'm wondering...

Has anyone attempted to take apart a 2009 and up head light or tail light to either paint the chrome strip or interior housing black?

I've seen the headlights done, but not the tails. If you look in the vendor section there's a group buy deal on Harley lights right now for 350 for heads and 130 for tails. There's a how to thread out there for the heads, costs about 20 bucks

I have HDs but would like to get my hands on some OEM chrome heads for cheap and take them apart to paint them. I did this with my 05 FX4 and loved that I could paint allot more black than the HDs had.

Yup. it can be done. I bought one from a scrap yard to practice because I was going to do a HID retro job on my 2010 F 150.

Now, I ended up sending my headlights to HID Illusionz for the retro because I wanted the work to be top notch....but I did successfully take my "practice" light appart, and even painted the crome bezzel you are talking about. I never ended up putting it back together because I sent my lights out to be retro'd...but the info is out there for the correct sealant to put them back together.....just take your time when you take them out of the oven....I had mine in the oven 3 times for 7mins at 250. there also is 1 screw you need to remove before you can remove the lense cover.

Ah, the old oven trick. I bet that will wreck my 3M film, but really if I bought new lights, I'd need to replace it anyway. Thanks for all the info, and Blackout, I've been following your build thread from time to time and it's actually your truck that got me thinking about the FX2 lights. Still got them?

I'm going for a similar look, but my truck is a FX4 Supercrew 6.5" box in sterling gray metallic. I'd order the HDs, but am worried it might be too much contrast and look distracting. White or black trucks look incredible with them.

Other than headlights, mirror reflector tint, a new grill and some black 22 or 24" rims, I don't think I'll be doing much more to the exterior.

That said, last night I was looking at another build thread with a white FX2 that used the Ebay projectors, which looked pretty good. I'm just afraid the small amount of modifications won't pull them off. Looking at your truck blackout, it looks like the rims will make just about anything pop.

I actually sold the FX2 heads and tails to a member on here with a sterling gray truck and they look really good on his truck! I think the HDs will look great if you do put black wheels on though.

Thanks for the assistance guys. I ended up baking them and painting the levels satin black. Looks like HD lights, red LED tails route to get rid of the rest of the chrome.

Looking at 24" Kmc slides w 305 35r24 or thicker.
