AC Issues caused by PCM?
AC Issues caused by PCM?
I have a 2006 4.6 V8. My AC does not blow cold air. The heat works fine. I bought the truck used and the AC has not worked since I bought it. I took it to a local mechanic who told me he was at a loss, he said all major components were working properly but he could not get the AC clutch to engage. I took it to a different mechanic and explained what the first guy found, he basically told me the same thing but recommended that the computer was in need of being programmed and he was not able to do that. I finally broke down and took it to a dealer. They had the truck for almost two full days when they called me to tell me the PCM was no good and it would be $1800 to replace. This seemed very high and given it is mid September I am good without the Air for a while longer. My question is does this sound logical? Does the PCM control the AC Clutch? Is there a better way to replace this part, if I cant reprogram it to my truck?
Yes, the PCM controls the compressor clutch on your truck.
I suppose you could rewire it to bypass the PC and control it more directly, but there's always the chance that there may be unintended consequences.
You could call around to different dealers and price the PCM replacement service. You might also check to see if you can find a rebuild service that you can send the PCM to for repair. Of course, the truck would be parked for the duration.
