Schizo A/C

I've got a couple of different issues with my AC.

First, mine is a 99 and has never been recharged. I had a leaking heater core that I had replaced about 2 months ago, but air had been blowing cold then. Prior to getting the core fixed, my AC went through about a 2 week period where it blew nothing but hot air, and after those 2 weeks, magically went back to normal cold air. Probably 3 weeks ago, the AC was still working fine, but after I made a 3 minute drive to the store and turned off the truck, it blew hot after cranking back up. The next day, initially blew hot from startup all the way through a 60 mile drive to where I stopped for gas. After I cranked back up for the remaining 50 miles, the AC was working great again! Worked for about 2 days maybe. Now, it'll blow barely cool air sometimes and hot air the rest of the time. If blowing hot, I can turn it off for a few minutes and try again and it'll be blowing out barely cool air. Air will only blow cool on fan settings 1 or 2. When switching to full blast, you can hear a change after a second and it immediately blows hot air.

Unrelated to whether the system cools or not, occassionally the air will just stop coming out of the vents for a minute although you can hear it blowing underneath the dash, even when turned on full blast.

At one time, I tried my luck running the A/C on a long trip and of course it wanted to blow hot that night so I turned it off. Guess what? It was still blowing hot air out of the vents and particularly the floor vents. My legs roasted until I pulled over and cut the truck off. After starting the truck again, there was no air blowing from the vents with the AC turned off.

I'd be very grateful on any advice for any of these problems. I'm thinking about just starting with a recharge of the system and leak check and see if that'll work.

Thanks all.

1) Busted blend door

2) Probably defaulting to defrost due to loss of vacuum.

Both really common.

Do I even need to bother with getting it recharged first? How much does it usually cost to get a blend door fixed? The heater core was an entire dash off job and i got ripped off on that one so just checking.

Same location as the heater core. Maybe they jacked something up when they did the heater core.

Like project Sho said check the vac lines, maybe you'll get lucky.

Good luck.
