a/c comp cycling

Hi,
I noticed my a/c comp was cycling on and off fairly regular while on Defrost, so I put a gauge on the low side. I was showing around 50 psi with the motor off, and with it running dropped to 25 with the a/c on and then the comp kicked out, then would slowly go back up to 45 psi, then the comp would kick in drawing it down to 25 psi and cut out again. I have an e-fan that is wired to kick on with the clutch and it was, so I am guessing this means I am low on refrigerant, but just wanted some advice. Btw its a 2006 F-150, 65k. Thanks.

Jaret

It's supposed to....

round 50 psi with the motor off,
That would correlate with either an ambient temp in the 50s or a low charge. How warm was it outside?

dropped to 25 with the a/c on and then the comp kicked out, then would slowly go back up to 45 psi,
Normal behavior, depending on ambient temperature and the frequency of cycling.

so I am guessing this means I am low on refrigerant
Insufficient information to reach that conclusion. Does the system actually WORK as it's supposed to under warmer climate conditions?

Hi,

thanks for the reply, I haven't had a chance to test it again as it is fairly cold here right now. I did notice that with an outside temp of 60F, while on defrost, the a/c was cycling every 20 seconds, with a run time of about 5 seconds. That seems to be more frequent than it did before, but maybe I just notice it more now with the e-fan coming on as well. thanks.
