Unhappy Problems with AC Compressor need help

My wife's 06' Escape has sparks coming from the AC compressor when the AC or defrost is on. I assume that it is the clutch/pulley. My question is how should I go about replacing this. Is it possible to replace the clutch/pulley or will I have to have the system evacuated and replace the whole compressor? I have no experience with AC systems in vehicles. Any advice/help would be much appreciated.
