Heater core

This is my second post on this, but, before I embark on either a costly trip to the shop, or messing something up to cost a trip to the shop, I am trying to gather as much info as possible.

2001 F150, with 4.6. Coolant was gone out of the reservoir finally, and there is a real stong odor of coolant throughout the truck. Took off piece right above transmission tunnel, and there is fluid there, but fluid doesn't smell like coolant. There is a lot of fluid coming out of where it should by condenser, but, seems like an unusually large amount. Not hot, and has no odor. The smell of coolant is strongest when standing by doors or inside vehicle itself.

Added water to empty reservoir to see if I could see it leak out anywhere, and what I added was gone in less than a minute. After I turned the truck off is when I noticed fluid under dash and fluid starting to come out from above cat on passenger side. Unit blows ice cold air and hot heat. Is this a bad heater core, or could it be a bad hose? There is no leak coming from anywhere in engine compartment.

all rubber hoses are inside the engine compartment, if your only leak is inside the vehicle from the heater core itself, it will smell of coolant inside, and if you run your heat , your windows should fog right up. If you dont have these symptoms, then you are leaking somewhere else, but should notice coolant all over your driveway

No coolant over the driveway, with the exception of the leak on the passnger side by the door. Crawled under truck, looks like it is dripping next to catalytic converter. It has no odor, but seems to be more than a normal amount. It doesn't stain the driveway though. There is a small amount of fluid leaking at the bottom on the inside, right above the tunnel for the tran. I am not leaking anywhere in the engine compartment though. When I run the heat to make the windows fog, do you mean run the defrost I take it?

yes to defrost your windows. your windsheild will start to fog, then your passenger and drivers side windows as well. It's a bitch to get the residue off as well
