I have a 1999 f150 with the 5.4L. The AC compressor is making a clanking noise while running. It appears that the pully on the compressor pulled out a little(.25"-.5") only when the engine is running, and there is a steel plate behind the pulley that is rattling like crazy. When you turn the AC on, it still blows ice-cold air, but the noise gets even louder. I think that it might be just the clutch assembly. Am I right? Dad says there is no way to replace it, you have to replace the whole compressor.

 

It seems like the pulley wobbles a little. Please help!?

The pulley also wobbles when the motor is running. When you turn the AC on, it still blows ice-cold air, but the noise gets even louder. I think that it might be just the clutch assembly. I would remove belt first and push/pull on pulley, it's possible that bearings may be going on compressor.

Sounds like clutch 2 me too....I heard you can change these while compressor is still on motor. There is a clutch kit available for this.

 

post there and search for a/c clutch to find out how to change the clutch!
