Blend Door victim

Has anyone tried cutting thru the glove box instead of ripping out the dash to replace junk blend door? I am really dreading this job. Looking for an easier softer way? Heater treater.com sells kits which tell you to cut out behind glove box and tape back hole. cost is @ 120$ but i am leary. anyone used this method? I have the 4.2 v6 so I am broke from fixing leaking intake and timing belt cover gaskets. thanks for any advice.

I'm bumping this thread because the search for heater treater came up with this one only. One week before I got the a/c fixed ($500 for compressor and misc) the actuator door broke. I really don't care what things look like behind the glovebox and 1-2 hours sounds better than 8-12.
So....anybody have any luck/knowledge/experience with heater treater?

It's happened to your 2008? OMG, is it covered by warranty?

I had a co-worker talking to me today about my truck and he said, is there a recall? Do they know about the problem? I said, oh yeah, they're aware. Just not willing to take responsibility.

I have a good friend who is in tight with Ford and I can get the job done, including a new heater core (which I thought would be a good idea since they are in there) for $450. That on top of the $435 I spent on the compressor will bring the total to $885.00 And, when I went to enter the date and miles in the service book for the compressor, I realized the odometer quit working around the last time I changed the oil.

I still love this truck, but it's really starting to get expen$ive

I have a 98 F15o XLT with 125,000 miles on it. I just got my truck out of the shop yesterday to get the blend door replaced. The gear pin broke and cracked the plastic door and rail. It cost $450 to replace at a local auto air shop in town. $500 less than the dealer. I too was not going to tackle taking out the dash by myself. Works great and well worth the price.

torkum- thanks for the post -Youtube video was helpful. I ordered a blend door and thought I could replace broke one with the heater treater method(through glove box) w/out buying the $130 kit but aftermarket doors $40 -requires dash removal anyway due to being one piece and is too large to fit in plenum box. The heatertreater door axle is 2 piece which enables you to fit bottom axle back under the dash @ actuator hole. I recommend Heatertreater for $130 on ebay, fairly easy fix but I had a die grinder air tool w/flexible extension with a wood/ plastic siding cutting bit from Lowes $7 for 6 bits. took about 1.5 hours. Hardest part is getting the flow diverter (black plastic box- under dash in center) out!! One screw in the back is a bitch. My mechanic wanted $375 for the job and he is my golfing partner!. dsdbergeron03- you didnt do bad for not getting your hands dirty! Dealer asking $1000!

glad it worked out!

I personally wouldn't want to hack my truck up since I'm just to much of a perfectionist.

I just recently took out the entire dash down to the plenum box the old fashioned way to fix a jammed diverter door, took me about 12 hours.

You beat me.

The first time anyone performs that job is the worst.
I had to replace my blend door last November. Remove the dash, etc. etc. etc.
2 hours later on my way home. Bear in mind, I have performed this job many times,
as it is how I make my living. But I remember the first one, All day job!!
Good luck with whichever path you choose!
If you jump in and need some help, there are many good folks here to help!!
