You need to borrow the ac clutch puller from autozone or somewhere like that.

http://www.autozone.com/in_our_store...ley_puller.htm

When using it, Don't pry against the compressor shaft (you can blow the seal). Put something across the casing to protect the shaft.

For my 98 Ranger it was about $100 at advance for the hub, pulley, bearings and coil setup, so I changed them all out. I was able to loosen the compressor and reset the pulley with a dead blow mallet without discharging the freon. The hub alone is $40 something.

You don't need that special tool. All you need is an 8mm wrench and a couple of screwdrivers.

1) Turn ignition to RUN without starting. Set A/C to any A/C position except OFF, FLOOR or VENT.

2) Locate the center bolt on the compressor clutch. Loosen it.

3) Turn ignition switch back OFF.

4) Remove bolt completely.

5) Gently pry the clutch hub disk off the shaft using the screwdriver(s) as needed.

6) When it comes off, watch out for small metal washers - those are your shim(s).

7) Install new hub with the shim(s)

8) Reassemble. Use procedure in step 1 to lock the system so you can tighten the bolt.

9) Test

Use a feeler gauge to measure the clutch gap. Desired gap is .014" to .033".

Do NOT purchase that aftermarket POS repacement hub from AutoZone, its dimensions are WRONG (found that out the hard way). Pick up the replacement Motorcraft part from a Ford dealer or from an online vendor.

How did you get the hub bolt off? I tried putting the key in the run position, but it never locked up.

Did you also have the A/C control set properly?

Was it cold outside? If so, the pressure in the system can drop below the engagement point.

If all else fails, it's pretty simple to use a wrench to hold the hub. Just pick a size that your socket fits inside of, place it over the socket, then lever the arm of the wrench against one of the "nubs" on the clutch hub while turning the ratchet/socket.

Thanks for all your help Steve! I got the bolt off, took the hub off, took the snap ring off, but now I can't get the pulley off, it's really loose, it seems like something is stoping it from coming off. It also looks like the bearings are not attached to the pulley, I don't know if there supposed to, but the new one looks like they are. Thanks again!

P.S. I live in Toronto, Ontario (Canada) so ya its pretty cold this time of year.
